Attention all MS members.I may like to warn you that however boring this review culminates to be, It’d be appreciated if you can strive a little to read through this review for it contains some useful information for you all and I would be pleased to patronize being useful to you. More necessarily so, because India has very negligible share of book readers and August the 15th being at an arm’s distance, I’d like to exhibit my share of patriotism by doing some thing useful, which on this instance is driving citizens to read good books as the one that is being reviewed.

Great Expectations.

Some of you might wonder about the story of book in relations to its title. Well, the title chosen by the author Charles Dickens is very apt & convincing. The book indulges in the life story of a young boy named Pip. (It’d be good to know later why he was named Pip while you read the book) Pip was born & brought up by his sister Mrs. Joe in a lonely low life village of Essex. Pip, as a lad, always had to witness the darkness in the form of poverty, fear & worse conditions to live. He had Great Expectations for his future. How he rises to the occasion, how life treats him, do his expectation satiate or not? For all answers, the book has to be read. (So very obvious)

How Different is this book from other of Dickens publications?

A good question there. Well, to say the least I found out that of the book that I read earlier (David Copperfield) This book of dickens is a much more imperative & understandable compared to Copperfield. A striking note of congruence is however found in Dickens work. He employs the fairer sex in great proportions in the lead characters around whom the story of the protagonist revolves. Also, the facts that qualities like hardships, gloom, death, sorrow etc nest in the story more than the feelings that govern happiness.

Environment.

For every book to be successful, the environ it creates has to be very enticing or influencing in order to grasp the minutest attention of the reader. Talking about this book, Shall I say that I completed this book in just 2 sittings? The story has enough in it as to not let you go (or disturb) for that odd phone call or the Irritating laugh of SRK on TV.

Language.

Language is good and very easy to understand. You would not have to strain your grey cells to understand the meaning of any word. The flow of language is smooth, the pace of the story is good and that gives us apt time to understand a particular story line and be ready for the next chapter.

Characterization.

Now, on this instance, the characterization is good and enough in numbers so as to remember. Unlike in David Copperfield, where new characters pumped up every now and then, Great Expectations has been a satisfying book with just enough characters and good relations set up between them.

Some element of thrill?

Yes. In fact this time Dickens made it sure to introduce characters with an element of default eerie awe in them. Had this book been transcended and made into a film, It would be a good one to watch. The story brings up circumstances at the most appropriate moments and before the author presents a new character, he leaves some questions unanswered which is definitely a good ploy. Naturally, all cards are opened one by one as you tend to inch near the last chapter of the book.

Is it just good? Isn’t there any qualities one would be sad about.

Again, every thing has its own set of virtues & vices. How can this be different? Just when Dickens try to relate to the already set up circumstances, on some rare instances he has failed to provide a satisfying answer to it. There are questions that are left unanswered. But now they may be due to my own outlook or may be a deliberate attempt by author.

Do you have anything more to say?

No. Just that read this book with a light mind. You would not be disappointed. This book by Dickens has been renowned world wide by critics and owing to its simple story line but great twists and the reputation of the author, why not give it a try? Come, let’s read this book. Let us increase the percentage of Book readers in India and also be a member of the community that can boast of having read Dickens most loved book. Yes. One thing. Don’t read this book with great expectations. Great Expectations are already there in the book, Should you read with greater expectations, You would end up thinking as to whose expectations were fulfilled. Yours? The author’s ? Or Pip’s?

Have a Great Independence Day. May India prosper more than it has ever imagined to become. Let’s be a major part in the instrument that would develop India. Jai Hind. Jai Hind. Jai Hind.
