Let us not talk about time. I mean not the time at which I am writing this but time which has no time. Sometimes you crash into something timeless, ummmm.for example poetry? Music? Ah! Art that is. Perhaps Gulaal falls into the category if you have a taste for it. I mean your taste, so don’t trust me.
I did not mind half of the audience murmuring, yawning, irritated and agitated. I was too engaged in a piece of art created from the ashes of literary burn outs, male dominated society, power, women, youth, legacy, blood, love, lust, abuse(substance+ conversation). Human so naked with his words, hideous with his intentions. So now the uncomfortable air is understandable, but I am happy for my friend who was didn’t chose to close her eyes and ears.
I read it somewhere. Anurag Kashyap thought of this movie when “paanch” was struggling to cross the censor blades. Inspired by a song from Pyaasa, “Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye to kya hai”, the film is a dedication to Sahir Ludhianwi and all the poets who dreamt of a free India, same way John Lennon dreamt of a free world- “Imagine all the people living life in peace”. But alas! Human is never satisfied. More he wants, easy and quick.
Gulaal is about lost glory of Indian feudalism which, in a way, shown as one of the subjects where Kay Kay Menon has identified himself as the proprietor of lost Rajput legacy and tries to reunite and re-establish, interestingly, by fighting the establishment itself.
Gulaal is about madness in love, love with women to be precise. Otherwise history says- love with power has brought good deal of destruction. But as we all know, men-women affection under burning lamps has brought more destruction.
Gulaal is about Piyush Mishra. At his insane best, in his acting, music and https://lyrics. If you have read the short story ‘Toba Tek Singh’, the madman, you know how much an insane makes sense. The disguised one from the society, and infact very much ignored. Anurag, put a complete commentary on history and contemporary world where the deeds very much lack basis. Logics fail but what rules is our greed of all kinds. Piyush earned his education from England and turns lunatic, a die-hard follower of John Lennon. Come later, every one of us is a madman.Incredible! Will come to his poetry and music later.
Gulaal is about gulaal. Red colour. Deep red, that sometimes flush out from your veins when a bullet takes your skin for granted. As a symbol of revolution in the movie, the practice of wearing gulaal while attending the speech of change, “brainwashing” in red aura. The red filter light in the movie is hypnotic, creates a claustrophobic feel and you might feel suffocated and seek a leak.
Gulaal is about the ultra-pumped up youth who is malleable and the prime tool to bring out a revolution. It’s easy to manipulate the force, direct it towards certain mean motive, exploit the passion and extract benefits. The youth is readily available, agile, powerful & ignorant. Now you know why BPOs are a hit in India!:(
Gulaal is about raw form of love, where you can go to any extent for self-gratification. Women in this movie is worth a notice. Willingly or unwillingly, all fall prey to male power and ego. Feminists might just have their eyebrows stretched while watching the movie, but then Indian royalty of the past has enough examples of women being the indicator of power play.
Gulaal is about Shakespearean tragedies. Believe me, am not going too far. Remember Othello, Anthony and Cleopatra, King Lear or hints of Hamlet, oh oh! Romeo and Juliet too! Yes! Don’t trust anyone. Fulfillment of motives can be prime, be it economical, social, sexual, political, psychological or anything you imagine.Everything is so inter-related that they sometimes form the basis of our existence. Good or bad are mere results of intersection of motives. So, many times it’s not a good or bad motive but a motive that yields.
Taking all discomforts of audience, here is close my experience. Yes, I didn’t mention anything about music and poetry as I promised. But then, I must have had my own motive. You read with your own.:) ‘wink’.
