~ Gullu Dada Returns with A Bang! ~

For the past five years there is an amusing trend of Hyderabadi movies that’s making waves in Hyderabad. These movies depict the Hyderabadi life style mainly of the middle class society. Every dialect has its charm so does Hyderabadi… I have seen Angrez which according to me was a remarkable attempt after which I have seen quite a few other Hyderabadi movies but they didn’t impress me much. But Gullu Dada certainly is a treat to watch.

Such movies give break to the local talent and we get to see the common man stepping into the shoe of an actor. I am familiar with the names of only the lead actors and so in this review I am directly referring to the characters.

The movie commences with a glimpse of the popular locations in Hyderabad. We are familiarized with the similarities of terms used in Mumbai and Hyderabad. Different terms with the same meaning.

Saleem bhai is shown talking to his friend Sharma ji… He expresses his anguishon not being able to find a suitable groom for his daughter, Zaara (Zarine Ali)… Sharma ji suggests him the name of his friend’s son, Aziz (Aziz Naser). Saleem bhai is convinced with this proposal.

We are now introduced to the protagonist, Aziz and his friends. Aziz is the owner of a Video Studio and he is a friend indeed who keeps suggesting his friends to join him in his business and not to while away the time.

Gullu Dada (Adnan Sajid Khan) is a financer who gives lakhs of rupees without any surety but charges heavy interest. His accountant Pasha manages the records. Whenever someone fails to pay the interest he is taken to Gullu Dada’s Court, where the proceedings begin after Gullu Dada honks the auto horn. Advance and Mogambo are his assistants. Throughout the day they keep collecting and warning the debtors. Gullu Dada falls for one of his debtor’s daughter (Shabnam), this love results in Gullu Dada clearing the debts of Shabnam’s father. Shabnam isn’t impressed by him.

Aziz accepts the marriage proposal and wants his marriage reception to be a grand event. He is in need of money and the only source he could think of for quick finance is Gullu Dada. Aziz borrows Four Lakhs on the interest rate of four thousand per day for a few months, which he should start paying after ten days. Aziz is helpless and with no other option available accepts the deal. He gets the money immediately. He is confident of paying the dues as his business is working pretty well. As he is busy making the wedding arrangements he appoints a manager to take care of his business.

Aziz is successful in meeting all the expenses and we get to see a grand Hyderabadi wedding with Dholak k Geet, Marfa and other ceremonies.

After the wedding Aziz’s life comes on the normal track and he goes to his shop. On opening the lock he discovers that the shop is empty and his manger has deceived him. He finds a letter from his manager saying that he left for Dubai and is sorry about the whole thing, he promises to return the money soon.

Aziz’s life comes to a standstill, he is in debt and he lost his business. He gets a call from Gullu Dada to pay the first day interest. Aziz runs from pillar to post to gather money. He sells his bike, gold and with a little contribution from his friend(Afzal) is able to pay around two lakhs. He soon gets another call from Gullu Dada saying that till now only the interest has been cleared and he has to return the actual sum.

In no time Aziz’s family comes to know about his loan. Aziz has no ray of hope and is quite disappointed about the whole thing. One of his friends tellshim about Gullu Dada’s love interest in Shabnam. Aziz is quite good at mimicry and uses this talent to annoy Gullu Dada.
