Trimurti Films’ ’Gupt’ is a lavishly mounted murder mystery with spine chilling thrills, breath taking action and beautiful locates added with hypnotising and haunting music.
Governor Jaisingh Sinha(Raj Babbar)is married to Shardadevi(Priya Tendulkar), a widow who has a young son Sahil(Bobby Deol) from an earlier marriage. Sahil always has a deep hatred towards his steps father despite Jaisingh going all out of his way to pour his love for Sahil. Shardadevi just remain a silent suffer. But one day governor Jaisingh confides in his family lawyer Thanawala(Raza Murad) and family doctor(Kulbhushan Kharbanda) that one day Sahil will realise his step father’s love for him.
In collage Sahil meets his childhood sweetheart Isha(Kajol) who is just back from her boarding school. Isha’s father Ishwar Diwan(Paresh Rawal) is personal assistant to governor Jaisingh. Sheetal(Manisha Koirala) is in the same college & silently but madly in love with Sahil.
When Sheetal’s father Megnath Chaudhary(Dalip Tahil), an ambitious, cunning business tycoon comes to known about Sheetal’s love for Sahil, he sets up a dirty plan which misguides governor Jaisingh & Shardadevi to belive that both Sheetal & Sahil are in love with each other and want to get married. Meghnath expects that with governor behind him, he will be able to expand his business empire further with many more foreign collaborations. Jaisingh Sinha sees an opportunity where he could win over Sahil’s heart and innocently announces Sahil’s engagement with sheetal at Sahil’s birthday party. Sahil gets outraged and furious because at the same time he was going to proclaim his love for Isha. Sahil confronts his step father and makes a murderous attempt with birthday cake-knife on Jaisingh but is timely stoped by Shardadevi. Amongst the people present in the party are minister Goverdhan Tiwari(Prem Chopra) and corrupt union leader Vilasrao(Sharat Saxena). Both decide to make a correct use of situation for their ulterior political motives against the governor.
On the next night Sahil goes to confront his step father but finds governor Jaisingh brutally stabbed to death. Sahil is shocked and worst comes when he finds himself accused of governor’s murder. Sahil gets arrested and imprisoned for life sentence after the prosecution. Sahil manages a dramatic escape from the jail which creates wild panic amongst the police and politicians. A smart and headstrong police officer Udham Singh(Om Puri)is assigned to catch Sahil along with P.S.I.Neelkant(Sadashiv Amrapurkar) and constable Pandurang(Ashok Safar).
Now Sahil, left on his own is determined to find the killer of his step father and prove his innocence to the world. Obviously this is not an easy ask. A wild chase starts with Udham Singh hot on the trial and fatal attempts by unknown assailant on Sahil’s life. Adding to the misery Sahil discovers many suspects who have reason to kill his step father for either personal personal or political motives. And finally, the mystery unfolds. Sahil gets a nasty shock when he gets to know the real killer.
The performances are A+ and the music is stormy. Bobby, Kajol and Manisha deliver the goods very effectively. There are many big names in the supporting cast. They are not wasted. Viju Shah’s music is on the Top 25 charts to date, some five years after it’s release. This is a great entertainer from the banner of Rajiv Rai.
