I have always been a big fan of romantic dramas; its focus on intense emotion, individualism, and passion often showcases a conflict between internal feelings and external circumstances. The core of romantic dramas revolves around the complexities of love, often with a sense of both earthly and spiritual experiences, which I truly connect with because it really showcases the harsh realities of life and relationships. Ive watched almost all the romantic dramas released so far, and was very excited for the release of Gustaakh Ishq because it features Naseeruddin Shah, an extremely talented and one of my favourite actors, known for his remarkable acting in numerous blockbuster movies. I couldnt wait for the release and was lucky enough to watch it on the first day, first show.
The story
The theme revolves around a man, Aziz(Naseeruddin Shah), entangled in the unconventional world of a reclusive poet and his daughter, Mannat(Fatima Sana Shaikh), forcing him to choose between his ambition, the integrity of art and his burgeoning love. The movie is set in 1998, with old-fashioned charm, showcasing the tehzeeb and adab that were once the norm in Hindi cinema. The movie has brought back the nostalgic charm of old-fashioned romance, where love is expressed through silence and soulful gestures rather than showoff. The conflict between the poets wish to preserve the poetry of his art and overcome the pressure of commodifying it makes it a worthwhile watch.
The Performance
I love the powerful and nuanced acting of the lead characters, especially Naseeruddin Shah. After a long time, he has made a comeback on the screen with his powerful performance as a poet. It was effortless, authentic, and held the film together with depth and dignity. Each dialogue was so precise and clear, showcasing his great talent on the screen. Additionally, Vijay Verma(Nawabuddin Saifuddin Rahmaan) has acted wonderfully as the love interest of Shahs daughter Mannat. Their love story in the movie has filled me with grace, and after a long time, I enjoyed the beauty of real love on screen. Not only Naseeruddin Shah and Vijay Verma, but Fatima Sana Shaikh has also done a great job in the movie, and her acting was so realistic throughout the film; I never felt bored in a single scene with her presence. Apart from the lead characters, the supporting cast, like Avyaana Sharma and Vaishnavi, also delivered impressive performances, significantly contributing to the movies success.
Cinematography & Music
I have seen many romantic dramas, but this movie stands out because it portrays an old-fashioned love story on the screen, where the young generation demands an energetic feel. The makers have intentionally kept the lighting controlled and subtle, Additionally, the work of building pleasing and memorable frames, including spectacular top-angle shots, was just outstanding. Although the music had a really soothing quality, it enhanced the movies feel and the on-screen chemistry between Fatima and Vijay. The background music was also very calm and composed. The song Aap Is Dhoop Me is very melodious and magical, which I still hum while doing any work.
Should You Watch It?
The movie is a slow-paced, nostalgic romantic drama with a great story, melodious music, and a beautiful portrayal of the bygone era of love. The lead actors, Fatima and Vijays, perform naturally and with heartfelt emotion. Additionally, Vijay Vermas effort in taking a non-negative role is quite impressive on the screen for the first time. Ultimately, it depends on your personal choice. If you prefer high-energy action, comedy, or fast-paced thrillers, this romantic drama may bore you. But if you love nostalgic, slow-burning romantic dramas, poetic Urdu dialogues, and the charm of old movies as I do, this film is a must-watch. I really enjoyed the film and its music, so I highly recommend watching it.
