Yesterday I watched Guzarish on M 2K Multiplex at Rohini, Tickets were quite high, and there was moderate crowd also, mostly the elder people, serious people or authentic audiences. The film was either good or bad that is some thing separate issue, but those who have not seen the movie, or planning to watch it, please I suggest you do not go with very huge expectations, the subject is very good, film could have been very better, or one of the finest film of the decade, but Banshali missed it.
Now before reviewing the movie, I want to share one of my personal experiences with you that might give you an Idea of the seriousness of the subject. Two three years back one of our distant relative got serious ill. Hegot a throat infection that was diagnosed a serious cancer. He spent many months in hospital, and then hospital authorities said that there is no point for him to stay in hospital, as death is inevitable. So on one day I with my mother visited his house just to see him. When we were returning from his home my mother told me on the way that his wife was saying that he was suffering so badly that she wish that god took her away. Well this was just an incidence and probably there could have been many, but the point is that in some exceptional cases when it confirmed that death is inevitable should not a person choose the death to keep away from suffering.
That was just an argument or an example in reference of mercy killing. Now let’s return back on the movie, the movie could have been very better, a finest classic of the decade, if Bhansali would have presented it with some simplicity or generosity. While watching the film you wonder that what the director actually want to show, mercy killing, or an relationship between a critically ill person with her nurse. Love story is largely ignored; there was not a single scene that established the relationship between Ethan and Sofia.
No doubt Bhansali has his own style of filmmaking, grand sets, lavious costumes, moving cinematography, curtains, classic tunes, but apart from all these glitz this kind of story require strong current of emotions, which film lacks. There are many situations when tear should come from your eyes instead you felt an irritation, a fakeness. Courtroom drama hardly makes an impact. Even Ethan’s relationship with her mother has not properly established. None of the side characters were given enough footage, it looks that characters have take for the advantage of script, it looks like supporting character pops up from nowhere and loses without leaving any impact.
Now come upon the performance of lead actors, Hritik Rosen is totally misfit, he could not showed the helpless, agony, irritation, of the requirement of the role. Ashwariya is good in instances, but again Bhansali has focused more on her beauty, moving camera to show her beauty in various shades, instead bringing the inner instinct and pain out. Suhaiseth is fine in small role. The lady in the role of a lawyer is disgusting and lacks seriousness. And music, why Bhansali is so overconfident, script required a professional music director, none of the tunes are impressive, though lyrics are good.
So in the end a very nice subject was wasted, a movie that could have been finest turned pathetic. Do not go with big expectations.
