Good service, bad wifi strength, pricey

I used Hathway broadband for about 4 months and was on the 5Mbps Unlimited plan(ZIP 5 - Max Unlimited - 1 Month). The fair usage policy allowed me to use it for up to 20GB after which the speed would be reduced to 256 Kbps.

Pros:

Good, consistent speeds.

Almost Incident free, had only 2 breakdowns in the 4 month period, and both were fixed within 24 hours.

Cons:

  1. I found it pricey(for high usage plans) at Rs 1299(1322 with taxes) for 20GB compared to MTNL or Reliance’s(Freedom 999) similar plans. One time installation charges were Rs 550 plus Rs. 2700 for the modem cum router.

  2. Also for Wifi, you need a cable modem cum router(CISCO DPR232R2), which you need to purchase from Hathway for Rs 2700 or Rs 1800, if taking a year’s subscription. Being a cable modem, it cannot be used for normal ADSL connections, which severely limits it’s usability and if you plan to move to a different provider you are stuck with a modem cum router which you cannot use.

  3. Customer service is a apathetic and could not care less, However when they pass you on to their techs, the techs are good at fixing issues.

To summarize, if you are looking a for fast broadband connection and don’t have high usage, you can go for it. Keep in mind that the cable modem cum router you purchase from them will not work with ADSL providers.
