A Creamy Cheese from Denmark

Harvati is arguably the most famous cheese produced in Denmark and is quite well known in the United Kingdom which is a very big market for Danish dairy products. It is sometimes referred to as one of the so-called ’’’’ Eye Cheeses’’ along with the likes of Gruyere, Gouda, and Emmenthal. Apart from cream Harvati there is the very popular Dill Harvati cheese but basically both are deliciously mild, very creamy, natural semi-soft cheeses laced with small-medium-sized holes. It a golden yellow colour with a moist body.

Harvati is, I feel, a slightly sweet cheese and is both a dessert cheese and a table cheese of considerable quality and appeal. It is a nice sort of cheese to nibble with a packet of Pretzels , goes very well with smoked salmon on rye bread and Dill Harvati often features in recipes for Grilled and Poached Chicken Brea-sts. Good wine partners for this Danish cheese include the likes of Bourdeaux, Rioja, Cabernet, Chardonnay and Merlot. You will find it easy to come cross Harvati in good cheese stores , grocers and most of the big supermarket groups give it shelf space in their deli sections. Is it worth including on your weekly shopping list ? Well, hat is a rather difficult question to answer since we all have our preferences , likes and dislikes. To me this Danish cheese is a pleasant enough product which is well worth trying now and again but is a tad too bland to justify as a regular cheese in my household.
