’A Woman of substance knows that The best flavour Food, the best savour Salt, the best love that of her man and children.’
I don’t know the origin of the quotation but I can certainly guess it is non-American because the way Flavour and Savour were spelt. You see I’m a bit of Sherlock Holmes too. All right… I’ll leave self-admiration, conceit behind and request you to forgive my frequent digression. I should be writing by keeping potential customers seeking for help or advise in making decision over buying the concerned product.
Forget about man and children and concentrate on Food.
I don’t need to revisit the pressure-cooking concept but just to mention it quickly
Pressure Cookers were made for fast cooking. As we all know Under Standard Temperature and Pressure conditions i. e. under natural weather and atmospheric conditions boiling point of water is 100 Deg Celsius (212 Deg Fahrenheit). Surrounding Atmosphere is the boss who controls the pressure and temperature of the water can’t be increased beyond the boiling point. As I mentioned previously Temperature is time independent as far as boiling point is concerned. It’s really interesting to know the Physics behind the Pressure Cooking. As the Pressure is constant the temperature also remains constant according to the gas equation. All we have in hand is the Pressure parameter, which can be varied to adjust the temperature. Now by the gas equation pressure is directly proportional to the temperature so when we increase the pressure corresponding temperature at which water boils is raised and accordingly there by decreasing time for cooking.
Need For Hawkins
Years back when I was in school we had Godrej Cooker. For over 20 years my father had used it and had no signs of giving it up. Cooker life is always long. I mean there is nothing to go wrong with the cooker except the safety valve, leakage of steam and misalignment of the lid with the vessel. With a little care that’s alien. The second problem I mentioned had occurred with our old family service provider that prompted or rather forced us to go for Hawkins. Cooking Capacity of the cooker is 8.5 liters, making it possible to cook in large quantity or big ingredients requiring a lot of space.
The Lid is in perfect grip with the body allowing a firm and lick-proof cooking. If there is a manufacturing deformity, defect in the grip then cooking time is directly affected. The maximum pressure for pressure regulator to come in to play is 15 lbs.
On the lid a safety valve is provided to let the way out for accumulated pressed steam in case of blocking of vent tube (which lets the way out for steam). This valve melts down like the fuse wire in case of electric overloading. An extra Safety valve is also provided free with the cooker.
A Pressure Cooker is generally made up of Steel coated hard aluminum or its alloy and all cooking ingredients and water are enclosed in the vessel. The Body of this cooker is made from a thick aluminum alloy with shiny, polished surfaced on outside and inside. Controlled pressure is applied by heating and when the desired pressure is achieved a whistle that is a Pressure Regulator is blown releasing steam in to atmosphere. The process can be repeated depending on the ingredients and required amount of cooking. Understanding the physics would certainly assist you in choosing a proper cooker or at least give a clue for what to look for in a cooker.
The problem I mentioned earlier in my previous review is with the pressure cookerRubber gasket, which seals the cooker and fills the space left between the body and lid. The life of gasket depends on the usage. If less or no water is used while cooking then the rubber is spoilt. After talking with my mother, she told me about the short life span of these gaskets. This model where lid fixes with body from inside gives better result with gasket and cooking.
Hawkins has a 5 years guarantee with the cooker so even if in rear case of defect the problem is solved. Finally for its renowned name, durability and quality I would recommend you to buy Hawkins Pressure cooker.
