HBO (Home Box Office) is a great movie channel. It shows movies and that is what is expected out of a movie channel. I feel, it is the best movie channel in India at present.
Before HBO, one had very few choices. Star Movies was the only good choice available and they really played the monopoly card. They used to retelecast movies over and over again and did not really show new and good movies. The advertisements were shown at more regular intervals. And AXN hardly showed movies regularly and that too very few good ones.
HBO was a god send gift for a movie watcher in India. It always shows new and latest movies. Even if they show older movies, it always would be the good ones and classics. Initially it was not a pay channel like Star movies, but that was only to hook viewers. Now they are also a pay channel, I believe.
The Saturday and Sunday night movies are excellent. And their HBO premiers are also very good movies. They show great classics as well. Of course, they too retelecast once or twice movies now. But nothing compared to what Star movies used to do (5-6 times).
What I really like about the channel is the limited advertisements shown. I don’t know how many of you have noticed this. When it started it had none at all. It definitely cannot be due to lack of sponsors for such good movies. I believe it was intentional on the part of the management. Even now when it has become the most watched movie channel in India, it has limited advertisements.
