HDFC Bank is just about an average bank - nothing really fancy there. The netbanking system is good and works well - although I dont know why they charge for carrying out transactions like Bill Pay etc. Other banks like ICICI Bank provide this service free of charge. I have had a couple of really bad experiences with HDFC Palarivattom, Cochin Branch.
There was this time when I was literally forced to open an account with them (at that time they were promoting a zero balance account) even though I already had a regular account with them. This new account remained dormant for a while and then I wanted to put my sons savings into this account - so I approached the bank and requested them to change the name to make it a joint account. I found it strange that they denied the request saying that this was not possible.
There was also this really arrogant staff member of the bank who literally told me take my business elsewhere if I did not want to open a new account in my sons name with a minimum Rs. 5000 balance. I just took the business to ICICI Bank who opened a Kidz account without a minimum balance requirement.
As a result of this experience, I opened another ICICI Bank account for myself and use it for all my trasactions. I just maintain the HDFC account to collect a few annual dividends from Units/shares which are designated to that account. I wrote to the manager of the branch who called me up to apologize for the tardiness but it definitely left a bad taste.
