Overweight and Obesity (part-1)

In today’s world overweight and obesity is one of the most discussed aspects of healthcare. When you go to any Good Doctor with illness like Backache, Arthritis, and Cardiac problems or for general health check up, they will check your weight, height, and age. You get an advice on bodyweight if you do not fall on the dot on the graph where you should be. A Sincere Doctor is concerned about overweight because of its effect on our general health. Overweight is outcome of our food habits and lifestyle. Many of us know about it but does not get enough time to take care of it or may be not motivated enough to work on it.


Why it is important to have control over Bodyweight?


Overweight and obesity are the RISK FACTORS for developing health problems such as High Blood Pressure, High Blood Cholesterol, Diabetes, Gall bladder disease, Gynecological disorders, Arthritis, Arterioscleroses etc. Over weight may lead to some type of Cancer and Lungs disorder. Because of multiple effects, it is a necessity to have control over it to keep away diseases.


Apart from all diseases, it makes us physically unfit to carry out strenuous jobs that can add value and color to our career. It may also make a person very lethargic to carryout normal routine work and create several complications in  our day-to-day work.


Our lifestyle is changing quite fast. Therefore, demands from the near ones are also changing. One can neither come home early nor lie down on a very comfortable sofa in front of TV and forget the rest of the world. For a very happy and comfortable family life, we have to be active and make others life comfortable and meaningful by our involvement. I just cannot blame someone for a sarcastic remark or non-cooperation due to my lack of involvement or initiative.


In short, it is not possible to give our best without Good Health and Physical Fitness.  Our initiative and contribution only can make the life full of delights. Luck may be one of the factors but I do not give much  importance to it. I cannot depend on something that is not in my hand.


How to loose weight and sustain what we have achieved


First step is to set an achievable goal.


Amount of weight lost to make life more comfortable may be much less than what we intend to reduce to look thinner. In normal case, health can greatly improve by reducing 5 - 10%  of initial body weight. Effective goal are specific, realistic and forgiving(less than perfect).


“Exercise more” is not specific.


“Walk 30 minutes a day, five days a week, and to follow a new diet plan to reduce 1 kg per month” is specific.


One has to check from the chart what should be body weight for ones height and make an action plan to achieve that. And plan is always achievable if we follow PlanDoCheckAct Cycle.

I have decided to write on overweight and post it in 2-3 parts otherwise reading a very lengthy one on the screen may be very boring.
