“Heartbreakers” – PG-13 – New This Week to Video/DVD
A Mother/daughter con team has come to town; Watch your wallets!
Max Conners and her daughter Page (Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt) have made their lives about scamming rich men out of their money. The latest scam is when Max marries Dean (Ray Liotta) and then sets him up to cheat on her with her own daughter. Max and Page never actually have any sexual activity with these men, but are very big teases. After she divorces Dean and gets her settlement from him, she and Page are off to their last scam in Palm Beach.
Max is trying to seduce an ailing rich man, William (Gene Hackman). He is a chain smoker and is very disgusting, but she is a trooper and works on making him fall for her. Page goes in as his new housekeeper to set up the same plot as they had done with Dean. But Page did not expect to find a man of her own. Page meets Jack (Jason Lee), the owner of a local bar. When she finds out that the town has offered to buy his bar for 3 million dollars she tries to set the scam up on him. But is she as cold-hearted as her dear old Mom?
Robert Dunn and Paul Guay wrote “Heartbreakers” and David Mirkin directed it. The story was actually a moral one. The Mother is trying to protect her daughter from living the life she led. It was a good story told in a very different way.
Sigourney Weaver was terrific in her role as the seductress. She is such a versatile actress. She is able to pull off this type of role and, on the other hand, she can play in a film like ”Alien.”
Jennifer Love Hewitt is just plain cute. In this movie she showed so much cleavage that my boyfriend was glad he decided to watch it with me. But that doesn’t mean she’s not a wonderful actress too. I started liking her when she was on the TV show “Party of Five” and have followed her career since then. She has the potential to be the next Julia Roberts!
Gene Hackman and Ray Liotta were great as the scammed men. They made Hackman look older and completely repulsive and he handles that like a pro. But my favorite character was Jason Lee’s. Lee is such an up and coming actor. He is starting to get bigger roles and really is showing what he’s all about. He plays all his characters with honesty and sympathy. If you haven’t seen him in a movie yet, go get one!
I would recommend this movie even though it is a little bit dumb. It is also very funny. If you usually read my reviews, you know I don’t really like stupid comedies. This is one of those exceptions!
Enjoy!
