Hellboy, great film, or a letdown?

Hellboy. When I saw the commercial, I was a bit in between. On one hand, it looked like an awesome film, with great action scenes, but on the the other hand it doesn’t look that great, and there are lots more films I want to see-should I go to see it? In the end I decided to go, as it may be a very good film.

It wasn’t a big letdown. The film opens with a bunch of military people, on an island, and a professor talking to a military man. Soon, you realize that the professor is a paranormalist, a man who studies paranormal activity. then, they find a gate, and beyond the gate, many people trying to create some sort of portal. It instantly hooks you right into the film, with a great beginning scene. Jump a little ahead, and a man gets sucked into the portal. Soon after, a little red thing jumps out of the portal before it is closed. Hellboy is introduced. The creature runs away, and two people follow it. It resembles a little red devil. They capture it. The movie then moves on to the present day.

Obviously, the main hero of this film is hellboy. A creature that was bought up by a professor, who investigates paranormal sightings with a creature that can see all sorts of things. Hellboy is in love with a human, a firestarter. Somebody who lets off fires from her body, even explosions, spontaneously. When a new recruit is introduced to the scene, Hellboy doesn’t like him from the start. Then they go on there first on-screen mission. This part is very entertaining, where you see Hellboy fighting a paranormal creature.

The film moves to the main plot. On the whole, it is a pretty cool film. But, there are small things that add up. Such as, the language hellboy uses. He uses a little immature phrases, and they take the whole super hero-with-attitude thing a little to far, that might appeal to a younger audience more then the more mature viewers. But then, since the plotline gets a little complicating, it’s obvious that it is not for seven year olds, so why include the immature parts? Another con is the acting. A very beleiveable performance by most, except the main human actor. In my opinion, he makes the film seem a little dull, as I didn’t like his acting style.
