This movie highlights issues with our school admission process, the misuse of RTE and the Importance of English if you want respect in high society, in a lighthearted manner. The audience knows that it is laughing at the character on the screen and itself, because both parents and children have undergone the stress of securing admission in a good English medium school.
Even the toughest individual bevomes nervous when they have to secure admission for their child in an English medium school - the tests, interview -and when they dont get the admission to the school they coveted for their child, they are ready to bend down to any level - donation, recommendations/pressure on the school authorities, try to plead their case to the principal and so on. Misuse of RTE seats has been highlighted many times in the media. Seats meant for the poor are given to the rich. Schools cleverly pressurize poor parents to leave the RTE seats be tagging on exorbitant fees for extra curricular activities. And the government schools are badly maintained with poor or no teachers forcing poor parents to send their children to private schools.
I love the fact that in this movie the mother is fighting for a great future for her daughter and the father supports that.Ths mother is not the typical emotional, screaming, loud mouthed Karan Johor movie mom, who only cares about her sons marriage and food. This mom is educated, focused and ambitious - ready to do anything for her daughter ( not son) and she drags her husband with her. She makes him wait in long queues for admission, move houses, change his dressing style, even pray at every place of worship. I know many parents who have done some of this or all of that in the hope of a better future for their children.
I wish more of the mainstream movies would tackle such issues which are important in our daily life, rather than focusing on abs, designer clothes and romances.
