To save power consumption (lower electric bill), I purchased inverter based Hitachi AC from Hitachi. Surprisingly, within 8-months (8hrs/day) of effective usage period, the AC stopped functioning. The company concluded that fan, compressor etc major parts were working fine. But the PCB was not working so it must be replaced for a cost of Rs.20000 (50% of price). Being engineer, I looked while it was being repaired. All of the three fuses on the PCB were ok meaning no power surge occurred. There was no indication of any black-region (smoking-dust remains) burn out of capacitor or any part. This means, the PCB board was as clean as brand new.
A small diode, transistor, or power IC does not cost more than few hundred rupees. Even any micro-processor of this type application will not cost more than one thousand. Replacement of board is the easy way out for the serviceman, but actual cost for repair can not be more than 10% cost of AC. Instead of repairing the board, I am getting the ONLY OPTION TO PAY FOR THE PCB that is Rs.20000, that is 50% cost of this whole AC ! I am left to fight with Hitachi, else get punishment of being a customer of Hitachi.
While selling if Hitachi tells that the PCB replacement will cost 50% of the AC price, no one would buy such a product. The compressor is within warranty range, but that is working fine.
