This is a continuation of my review of Kodava Trails https://mouthshut.com/review/Coorg-126025-1.html
This section covers Food and Shopping at Coorg. For want of space I had to move the remaining part here. It also includes a brief review on Coorg International.
PLACES TO SEE:
AROUND MADIKERI
*Siddapur, Ammathi, Pollibetta & Gonikoppal:
(29-40kms from Madikeri)*
- These four places make the Golden Coffee Quadrilateral of Kodagu and
fittingly deserves the name. Dense coffee plantations abound. You can see names
like Cannoncod Estate, Alathcod estate etc. But unless you are staying in any
of these there is nothing that you cando at these places. If you can get a
ride or a walk arranged in these plantations in an open jeep or something, then
you can visit. There are plant and coffee nurseries in these towns.
Treks:
There are lots of Tourist Information Centers in Madikeri town that will help
you in arranging treks in hills or around the river bank of kaveri.
Bike hire:*
You can hire a bike to move around these places, thats only if you are ready to
be prepared for a stiff butt.
FOOD:
Coorg Cuisinette **(recommended for sampling the cuisine)
- Right opposite to the KSRTC bus stop in Madikeri, this places doles out
traditional Kodava cuisine. Try the Pandhi curry(pork), rice roti, rice balls
and rice noodles. Spice content is quite heavy and our quite obvious guess was
because of the copious amounts of spices cultivated in the area.
Coorg International*
- Its a class hotel, but not distinctly Coorg. You get only pan Indian butter chicken and naan, roti kind of fare. The afternoon lunch
buffet is avoidable. However its a good place to stay since its about 4 km from downtown and cleanly maintained.
Hotel East End(highly recommended)** [2 km from downtown]
- Excellent regional dinner, though you wont get traditional cuisine. The
typical chicken curry and dishes will be laced with coconut and spices and will
give a typical coorgi taste.
Hotel Athithi**(recommended) [ 1 km from downtown]
- For simple vegetarian lunch.
Hotel Raj Dharsan*
- Near to Raja seat. Vanila Indian Veg and Non-Veg food. South Indian, North
indian, Chinese are available.
SHOPPING:*
No visit to Kodanadu is complete without buying spices, coffee and honey. You
can see tourists buying the "Coorg Wildlife Society" green stickers
as if it is a decorative piece!
HAPPY HOLIDAYING. Feedback welcome at sathishvm(AT) gmail.com
