I traveled to Panchgani 2 weeks ago to welcome the monsoon in the hills. Panchgani is my favorite destination when I want to spend 2-3 days away from the maddening crowd, to gaze at the sky for hours, or walk in the midst of nature listening to the birds sing and the bext time to visit(an opinion, I know people will differ) is just when monsoon hits.
During this visit, I stayed for 3 days and 2 nights at Prospect and returned more than delighted. I highly recommend this location for anyone who wants quiet time - whether to sit in the lawns reading a book, or spend time with family or simply listen to the silence of nature. I visited it during the off season, and with few guests, the place was heaven. The hotel is conveniently located at a 10-minute walking distance from the Panchgani main market so you are never far from civilization. Yet, nestled in the hills it offers the perfect location to find solace from the rest of the world. There is a shortcut to the Table land from the hotel, and the Sydney point is a 10-15 minute walk.
The decor and ambience at the hotel(wouldnt like to call it that), will remind you of the 19th century - there is a nice collection of antiques including a piano from the 19th century, magazines and news papers from all over the world displayed alongside collectible books and even matchboxes. Masks from the Maldives adorn the walls. The place is run by a family, and they make you feel at home as much as possible. I had called the hotel informing them I will arrive at 11:00 AM, and the lady of the house was thoughtful enough to set aside breakfast as we had driven down from Mumbai. A homely, welcoming family is any day better than a professional receptionist!
The food at the restaurant is better than anything I have had in Panchgani - at dinner, the tomato soup was delicately flavored with herbs, and the mutton with potatoes was simply awesome. The portions are generous. Ditto with breakfast, although was a bit disappointed not to have eggs! Remember to let the family know in advance though if you will have meals, as they dont work on an A La Carte Menu, and prepare set meals on prior request only. The family has their meals in the same dining hall with the guests, and that should speak enough for the quality of food and hygiene levels.
The only flipside - The normal rates are a bit expensive, although I got a cheap deal since it was not a peak-season time.
All in all, a fantastic cozy home in a beautiful location! Highly recommended.
