I just finished reading House of Echoes and was eager to include my personal comments here. As this was my first encounter with this author, I was engaged enough to want to read another of her books in short order.
This story was interesting, entertaining, absorbing, and best of all, adequately mysterious for a ghost story. The personalities of the storys characters are believable. The plot is almost believable even though supernatural, which is a commentary on how well it is written.
Ms. Erskine has authority over her facts and background information to support its credibility and historical influences. Not quite what I consider historical fiction, the slight connection to real history lent support to its seriousness. My only criticism is her repetition of certain phrases, which after a few times too many, is slightly grating.
I finished the book feeling like there were some questions left unanswered in this ambitious plot, but my mind was left wondering about the possibilities. That did not hurt my opinion of the story.
Overall, I feel the book did what I had hoped it would, entertain me thoroughly.
