These days there is almost a hustle among all the youngsters to go abroad for studies. Everyone has their own views about pros and cons for the same.
The educational requirements for undergraduate studies is usually your SSC and HSC marks. Besides this TOEFL and SAT is usally required.
TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) : This is is obligatory for all those students seeking admission whose are from countries where English is not a native language.
There is no pass or fail marks for these tests. The requirement of certain marks needed for admission varied from university to university. The English is as spoken in North America. These tests have multiple choice questions and are divided into 3 section :
1) Listening comprehension - 50 questions time: 40 min
2) Structure and Written expression - 40 questions time : 30 min
3) Vocabulary - 60 questions time: 50 min
1) Listening Comprehension : This test is taken to test the students ability to understand the usage of English as in North America. The questions are taped and only the options are given in the question paper. So the students need to have a presence of mind while attempting this section. The taped information single sentences, conversations etc which cannt be heard more than once.
2) Structure and Written expression : This tests the grammar of the students and how well they can relate with English as spoken in North America. It comprises of incomplete sentences which are to be completed and incorrect sentences which are to be corrected. For this, the student should be well prepared with grammar.
3) Vocabulary : As the title suggests, this tests the vocabulary of a student. They have to be well prepared with the vocabulary, synonyms. This paper comprises of vocabulary related questions and written comprehensions.
For TOEFL, the student should practice comprehensions and should be thorough with vocabulary. As TOEFL has no negatve marking, there is no passing system.
