The HP LaserJet 1100, a, sae, & xi is a sturdy printer that
cranks out copies magnificiently some of the time. There are two problems, one more resolvable than the other. I had the printer for three years. With decent design, Id have it another four.
The first flaw is no place for the printed copies to go.
The receiving tray gets full fast. This printer is quick
in draft mode. The end result is papers spewing everywhere.
I think there may be an attachment to hold the finished copies in but the space allocated is too thin. This is not
major, just an annoyance.
The big flaw occurs when a sheet of paper or sheets get
stuck near or underneath the roller. The feed may be fine
but once paper gets stuck, unless someone is a skilled
mechanic with patience, disgust sets in quickly. Why?
There is no easy way to extract the stuck papers. Other
than trying to gently pull them out, there is only one
other procedure. How HP made a printer with a jam mechanism that doesnt work is beyond me!
If a person cant pull the paper out, from the back or
front, then one must unscrew two large screws at either end of the roller, plus some other smaller ones. Then a person has to be dexterious. I have had three different
computer repair firms work on the 1100 when paper is jammed. My repair bills have cost virtually three times
its original price. Finally, I gave up on 12/28/02.
I gave up with pieces of three-four sheets under the
roller. There were no more paper ends to grab.
If your paper doesnt stick or catch at times, the printer is wonderful. It doesnt use ink like a desk/injet. The
toner cartridge is easy to extract and get refilled. The
print quality, even in draft mode is excellent. In top
set, the laser print is distinct.
Heavier paper is recommended. 20 lb gets stuck easier. Also
some times extra sheets go through without being printed.
But even with 24 lb paper, this printer has caused me
many nightmares and lost time while it is being unclogged
at repair shops. The big screws are tight!
Looks good & prints good while this is occuring. When there
is a jam, get out some relief. HP missed the unjammer.
