Lacks features but a good multimedia phone

HTC smart was recently launched by HTC.It works on brew Operating system. The user interface is quite good. Looks are impressive.

The back key serves as the main menu key. Also there is a menu button which is used to access options while surfing the web or even on the home screen. Its a bit different from other phones. But one gets used to it as one uses it regularly.

The home screen can be customized. 3 icons appear on the main screen. If you slide up, 6 other icons would appear. You can change each icon and select the one you prefer. If you slide right or left, some other screens will appear like messages, photos, calendar, etc.You can select which screens you want. You can set 9 speed dials(with images).Speed dial not only includes the option to just call but also to message. The lock-unlock system is good.

It seems to be pretty much inspired by the Android OS.There is a menu button and a back button like in android. The Notification window can be accessed as it can be in android(by sliding a finger from the top of the screen to the bottom).

Viewing images on the phone is truly a pleasure. The camera is quite good. The images taken are sharp. However, you cannot select the folder in which you want the images to be saved. It lacks image effects. The flashlight is good.

Storing contacts is easy and great.Bluetooth works fine.An annoying thing is that when you revieve a file via bluetooth, the phone does not directly open the file browser. You need to manually go to main menu, select file browser, then phone storage and finally bluetooth folder.

Calendar is good. You can set reminders for events.Alarm is also good.

Web browsing is convenient. But the mail and FriendStream does not seem to work with all sevice providers(Atleast it does not work with Vodafone in India).

The input method can be changed while typing messages or so.But the QWERTY keypad is difficult to use without a stylus(which is not provided along with the phone). The normal screen keypad is good.

One thing that it lacks is compatibility of applications. It supports only java applications. Also, the amount of RAM allocated to java applications is too less.So the applications work quite slowly. The camera lacks zoom feature(though it is available while recording video). There are a very few inbuilt applications. It lacks some basic applications like a unit converter.

The music quality is good.It lacks dedicated keys for music.A very stupid thing in the music player is that the "Next" button and "Previous" button both perform the same function. For example if I am playing a song and the shuffle mode is on.Say I press next. Now if I want to listen to the previous song, I would do it by pressing the previous button. But this does not work here.A new song wil start playing even when I press the previous button.Another stupid thing is that if I select a song, and if I reduce the volume before that song begins to play, then that song won’t be played at all.Another song would start playing.3.5mm audio jack is useful if you want to connect it to a home theatre or an external speaker. The radio works just fine.

Overall it is a nice multimedia phone. If you do not make much use of applications and can bear the above mentioned cons, and if you just need a touchscreen phone with good looks, then this is it.For specification, go to https://htc.com/in/product/smart/specification.html
