Return of the Godfather!

INTRODUCTION

I don’t know if much of you have heard about the Malayalam movie ’’Godfather’’ which was one of the best movies ever made. It was a turning point in the career of Mukesh who was the hero of the movie. I don’t know how many languages this movie was dubbed to.

I am not sure whether the Hindi version will be able to make that much of an impact because a lots of remakes have failed to create the impact which was there in Kerala. The most prominent examples being ’’Beti No:1’’ and ’’Krodh’’. ’’Eh Tera Ghar Eh Mera Ghar’’ was no exception.

The two exceptions were ’’Hera Pheri’’ and ’’Hungama’’, both doing some good job. But, I believe that Hulchul got a better chance of success because it got a much better story line and sentiments - Priyadarshan also has been improving every day.

I knew what this movie was all about right from the day I saw the advertisements. This one is set to make you laugh and cry at regular intervals. So be prepared for anything or everything!

THE PLOT

Hulchul focuses on two families which hates each other more than anything. The first family is headed by the hot tempered Angaarchand (Amrish Puri) who does not even want the name of any woman in the house.

The other one is under Lakshmidevi (Lakshmi). Her family consists of three sons and one granddaughter by the name of Anjali (One is enough - isn’t it?). Angaarchand has four sons (Jackie Shroff, Paresh Rawal, Arbaaz Khan and Akshaye Khanna) who never thinks about women nor marriage.

Lakshmidevi wants to get revenge against Angaarchand family in any way possible. Angaarchands youngest son, Jai, and Lakshmidevi’s granddaughter, Anjali (Kareena Kapoor) studies in the same college (that is the reason for us to be seeing this movie?).

Lakshmi wants Anjali to act love with Jai and trap him so that Angaarchand would bow before her. But as Jai’s best friend, Lucky (Arshad Warsi) asks Jai to act love with her too, everything is just twisted.

Both plans fails to work and everything goes worse and out of control as Jai and Anjali begins loving each other which may prove injurious to the health of lots of people. They just can’t get married because of the enemity between their families and the big fight is just about to begin.

Which will win? Love or hatred? What role does the other members of the family have to play in this game of war and love? As we find that one of the sons of Angaarchand is secretly married and one of Lakshmi’s sons is on the side of the lovers, the movie takes some turns. The emotions come only in the latter part - comedy is the major thing.

PERFORMANCE

Along with the direction of Priyadarshan who has managed to do a nice job, the movie just got a huge star cast. Amrish Puri looks great just like what he does as an angry old man who is respected and feared. There may have been no one else in Bollywood to replace him as he is one legend in these type of roles.

The way in which Parwesh Rawal and Arshad Warsi brought humour into the movie is quite impressive. Without them, I can’t figure out how this movie would become. Akshaye Khanna and Kareena Kapoor are good, but I expected much more from them. Akshaye hasn’t given that performance that Mukesh gave in the Malayalam movie.

Arbaaz Khan, Jackie Shroff and Shakti Kapoor doesn’t have the biggest roles to play, but they manages to do what was expected. Lakshmi is adjustable, but not at every moment. The movie got such a huge amount of talent inside.....

CONCLUSION

After some long thinking I decided to recommend this movie not only because I liked the Malayalam version, but also because it got almost all contents a good family movie should have even with the presence of some nonsense which is not quite usual in Bollywood movies, but just at a low rate.

The movie has been much talked about for a long time and I think that it can be a hit even if I don’t like the songs of the album very much. Just don’t think too logically while watching this movie, you may open your mouth too wide.

This movie has controlled sentiments, unlike highly sentimental movies like ’’Kal Ho Na Ho’’ which tries to capture the viewers’ mind with the cheap emotions. Even I liked that movie even if I never wanted to as it was a good one!

Our Hindi ’’Godfather’’ is going to be an entertaining movie if we consider it as a whole. It is much better than seeing the movies like ’’Naach’’ which have the high tendency to bore you!

Let’s see how this movie is going to fair at the box office.....one thing is sure - if you did love Hungama and Hera Pheri, you will love this one too - a typical Priyadarshan movie just like in Malayalam.....
