This is a run of the mill movie in a lot of ways, and I was surprised at the number of awards it took. But then, we dont take these award ceremonies serioursly, do we, except to see who wore what and what not?
The first half is all about the love that grows between Salman and Ash, while her parents happily fix up a match with Ajay Devgan. Her father, Vikram Gokhale - a renowned musician - has great faith in his daughter, and the shock of finding her in Salmans arms is too much to bear. He gives up music.
Forced with this threat, she reluctantly marries AD, but hurts him with words on the first night itself. He soon finds out the truth and decides to bring Ash and Salman together. His quest to find SK forms the rest of the story - and what happens in the end.
For all of Aishwaryas beauty, I would have hated the movie hadnt Ajay Devgan performed the way he did.
It was a role difficult to believe in. But, he adds a poignance which makes your heart go out to him. The scene where he tells his father abt Ashs previous love and his determination to bring the two together is shot beautifully and keeps you in the same room as them. You know every pulse and impulse that runs through AD.
The second half, if you forget the improbability of a husband going to the trouble that AD went to bring Ash and Salman together, is full of such touching moments.
But, otherwise, the movie is predictable - because the bharatiya naree has to preserve her image. And we cant make life uncomfortable for Indian husbands and their families by showing revolutionary endings. But, I guess that was not the point at all.
Watch it if you have nothing better to do and enjoy drama. I do, so I have seen it more than once - not in theaters, but if it conveniently served in the drawing room. While the title song is good, my favourite is aankhon ki. Very melodious and haunting.
