I have seen many review here for Ekta Kapoor and her daily soaps. But here I am not going to talk about those. I am going to talk about a beautiful laughter riot comedy from her.
There were many memorable comedy serials in Indian Television History like Yeh Jo Hain Zindagi, Wagle Ki Duniya, Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Ghar Jamai, Tu Tu Main Main, Filmi Chakkar, Hello Friends, Baat Ban Jaye, Hum Saath Aath Hain. Among all, I feel Hum Paanch is one of Top 3. It was very popular serial during its time.
Balaji Telefilms began its operations with ’Mano Ya Na Mano’ which was aired on Zee TV in 1995. The second serial of the company was ’Hum Paanch’. So different to what Ekta is preparing right now, she had prepared a really good comedy serial. Lets look at some of the characters of Hum Paanch.
Anand Mathur: He works with a medicine company. He has two wives and five daughters.
First wife : Priya Tendulkar worked as first wife of Anand. She had passed away.
Bina Mathur: She is Anand’s second wife. She has kept no difference between her own daughters and her step daughters. In any given case she will take side of her daughters only.
Meenakshi Mathur: Eldest daughter. She is working in Women Liberation Organization and having red eye towards men. She respect only one man and that’s his father.
Radhika Mathur: Second Daughter. Rightly being called “defective piece” by sweety. She can’t see well and hears too well!
Sweety Mathur: Third daughter and the most exciting character. She has only one work and that’s find a suitable husband. Initially wooing for Shahrukh and then was after Akshaykumar
Kajal Bhai: Fourth Daughter (Bina’s first Daughter) One of the most innovative character on Indian TV of 90’s. She spends her time in goondagiri and members of the underworld.
Chhoti : The last but not the least. She is a real cracker. Get all kind of news for her mother from society. She knows all affairs and lafadas around her.
Pooja aunty: Neighbor of Anand Mathur. She hates being called “aunty” and so She has given a very popular dialogue - Aunty mat kaho na.
KadarBhai: Kajal Bhai’s godfather, he’s involved in underworld. He is, however, almost like a family member, and is always present at the Mathur Family.
There are few other characters also like Anand’s boss (played by Popatlal), his dither, Sattarbhai Pineapplewala, Pooja’s Husband who had contributed to serial time to time.
Some facts about Hum Paanch
First time it was started in 1997.
Sweety (Rakhee) was married in between the serial so she has taken some breaks from serial.
Sweety was replaced by he student (hateli) for some episodes.
Sweety was after Shahrukhkhan initially but when she was married to Raveena’s brother she had to replace Shahrukhkhan with Akshay.
Meenakshi had given birth to baby boy during the serial so it was shown that she had went to some social service in different state.
Radhika’s role had been given to 3 different actresses but the first one was best.
Chhoti was also changed once but not accepted by all so old Chhoti came back.
Serial was again tried to be aired after 5 years but the come back was not successful.
