The Movie
I went to watch the movie yesterday with my friends, hoping that it would turn out to be better than its music was.
And it did! Yay! :D I loved the movie. It has its share of flaws and it has its share of pros..
But ultimately, it comes across as a nice, CUTE, feel good movie. Never thought cute could be used to describe a movie, but theres no other word for this one.
A big improvement over the director Kunal Kohlis earlier venture, Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Hum Tum definitely scores many points over MDK.
What I havent understood, is how this movie looks real yet you know all this cant happen for real.
The story isnt really original, and Im talking about it as a story, not as a movie. As a movie, I know, people have been saying its a copy of When Harry Met Sally, but I cant say anything on that, because I havent seen WHMS (now why are you staring at me like that?)
But as a story, even though it is still the boy and girl meet, dont like each other at first, and gradually fall in love, Hum Tum is different in the fact that the gradually is actually gradually, as in over a period of a few years and not in a few months or even weeks like most Hindi movies.
=The story: =
Hum Tum starts off with Karan Kapoor discussing his latest book based on his cartoon characters Hum and Tum which takes him (and us) back 9 years, when he was a student, going to New York. On the way he meets Rhea Prakash and strikes up a friendship with her. Just an acquaintance, rather, because they are poles apart in their personalities. Chalk and cheese are nothing. Compare Einstein and your washermaid! They are that different.
After their first meeting, they follow their different directions in life, but fate has other plans for them. For the next 9 years, they keep bumping into each other.
In the span of 9 years, both Rhea and Karan change, they grow up, and grow serious! (hehe)
They fight, they become friends again, they fight again, and become friends again, but they just cannot see a proper end to their story.
But we do know what happens at the end, dont we? Its exactly what is expected, but tell me something, if it really were a sad ending, would you have enjoyed the movie any more than you did? I dont think so, and thus I have no problem with the cliched ending.
(I looove happy endings! hehe, )
==Things I didnt like:==
- Some of the scenes had some heavy emotional dialogues which were a bit unreal, and to me atleast, sounded really weird and Kekta serial-ish. Like the time when Karans father talks to Rhea about his and Karans mothers separation and Karan overhears it and STARTS CRYING! How very ....weird! You just cant imagine a guy like Karan crying, I am not saying a guy cant cry, Im saying, that Karan kapoor cant cry! nope. No sirree.
(You can disagree with me, but mujhe to aisa hee laga)
- The cartoon strips in between the scenes. At first they were ok, cute actually. But they included the strips too many times...I mean they werent even funny, so only 2-3 should have been there, not more than that.
Performances:
Saif Ali Khan proves that he is not just another actor in Bollywood. He acts and he acts good. In fact hes a lot better than many of his contemporaries! Though his character does seem to be in the same mould as Sameer from DCH, he manages to give it a fresher look. Cant imagine anyone else playing Karan Kapoor!
Rani Mukherjee:
Plays Phea prakash with perfection. The change in her, from the lively spontaneous and fun rhea to a more shy, a bit sad, reserved and sombre Rhea is acted out really well by her! I daresay, Rani plays a role similar to Preitys in khnh, but in reverse, and in my humble opinion, she does it a lot better than preity.
Rishi Kapoor(Karan Kapoors dad), Rati agnihotri(karans mum), kirron kher (rheas mum) , Jimmy Shergill(karans best friend with a very ugly french beard) , Isha Koppikar(Karans friend in a special appearance) and the actor who plays rheas husband (LOL, Nooo I wont reveal his name!) are all fine in their respective roles. Dont exactly shine in them, but are good enough, as needed.
I dont have much to say about them.
Watch it once, and let me know if you liked it.
And if you didnt, remember, look into my eyes: yoouuuu donnt knoowww meeee...youu neverrr read thisss reviewwww
OK?

btw, I think, obviously, Hum aur tum sirf dost bhi ban sakte hain! Karan Kapoor paagal hai! :)
