HUM TUM
Directed by: Kunal Kohli
Produced by: Aditya Chopra
Distributed by: Yashraj films
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherji, Kiron Kher.. and many other surprise packages! ;)
Kunal Kohli?s first film Mujhse dosti karoge failed not because it lacked something necessary, but because it had something really unnecessary? and I am talking of Kareena Kapoor! He is back with a different subject, a different setup.
PROMOTION OF THE FILM
These days the ?trailer? of the film is as important as the film itself. The first teaser was of a cartoonist who sketches two characters with super gait and the characters spring to life! This was enough to catch the viewers? attention!
The other promos were fine. But the promotion of HUM TUM was done in a unique fashion ?
Cartoon strips were published in The Times Of India since a month before the film was released. The cartoon strips had a boy, Hum and a girl, Tum fighting over things. As the boy is named HUM, it was quite understood that it was mostly going to be from the boys? viewpoint.
Saif Ali Khan appeared in the very famous JASSI JAISSI KOI NAHIN (that s the way they spell it ?Jaissi?) as the cartoonist ?Karan Kapoor? what he plays in HUMTUM. It was sufficient to mount the expectations and curiousity.
After the film was released, recently, Kunal Kohli appeared in YEH MERI LIFE HAI where he played himself, a judge for a competition in St.Martin?s. There he said, ?When I made Mujhse dosti karoge, I tried to copy the great directors, and I failed. When I made HUMTUM, I was me myself and so I succeeded.? ;) applause applause!
SYNOPSIS
This is a film with a difference. The plot stretches over a period of 15 years. A girl and a guy keep meeting each other, they are almost strangers. But the way their lives start influencing each other, is the subject of the film.
They meet for the first time at the airport while Rhea Prakash (Rani Mukherji) is leaving for her studies abroad and her momma Parminder (Kiron Kher) is bidding her good-bye in a quite weird (read ?loud?) fashion while Karan Kapoor (Saif) and his mom (Rati Agnihotri) look on.
They keep meeting again and again, become friends, and realize that they are in love towards the end. But whether the love story reaches a happy ending is what you have to watch for.
ABOUT THE PLOT
The plot has two major twists in the first half and the second half has a small twist. The entire plot has been very carefully handled and the transition of both these characters as the age progresses is astounding!
The cartoon sequences between the two characters, Hum and Tum are interspersed which only add to the innocence of this love story.
The too many special appearances tend to pique you at times, but it?s fun to watch a new face coming up every half an hour!
Whatever the case may be, the film does have the Yash-Chopra-feel to it!
THE PERFORMANCES
Karan Kapoor, the teenager, then the cartoonist is a change which Saif Ali Khan has very beautifully portrayed. But certainly, Rani Mukherji has also displayed BRILLIANT performance!! Kiron Kher is very lovable. Rati Agnihotri and the ?surprise? characters are just fine.
MUSIC
The title song is very good and beautifully picturised. ?Ladki Kyon?, ?Gore gore? are the typical Yash Chopra numbers. The music is good, but lacks the ?classic? value.
THE FLAWS IN HUMTUM
The second half tends to get a bit slow and boring.
There are certain questions with the plot you can?t really answer.
That?s it about HUMTUM!... Worth watching, but then I don?t think someone would want to watch it more than once!
