This is one of the classics, originally written in French. Esmeralda, is the beautiful gypsy heroine who is loved by everyone, the Captain, the ugly looking hunchback Quasimodo and even Quasimodo’s father Frollo. When Quasimodo is flogged, Esmeralda is the only one who brings him water to drink.
So when Esmeralda is sentenced to death, the ugly hunchback shunned by all, saves her and takes her to the cathedral for sanctuary. But the laws that be decide that she must be killed. Eventually she is hanged, after a betrayal. Quasimodo chooses to die with her. It is a story of kindness and the lack of it, of love, of jealousy, hatred and betrayal. But all in all, it is a touching story, a good read.
