Hungama is a romantic comedy with mistaken identities. Director Priyadarshan possesses a skill in directing light-hearted comedies who can forget Hera Pheri that was laughing riot all the while. The movie introduces Rimi Sen. Hungama is a melange of an urban romance and a strong case of mistaken identities just like the comedy of errors.
Coming to story, Anjali (Rimi Sen) comes to city in search for better job prospects and future but finds difficulties ready to greet her arrival in the city. The first problem for Anjali is to find accommodation and this is where she meetsNandu (Aftab) through a local dhoodwala. Nandu too has come in the city looking for a job and has difficulties in even finding a house. The milkman advises the two that it would become much easier to get a house if they pose as husband and wife to a miser moneylender and landlord Tiku Talsania.
One-day Anjali meets a rich man Paresh Rawal for the purpose of getting a job. Paresh owns a bungalow and coincidentally even his wifes name is Anjali (Shoma Anand). It is in Pareshs house that she meets Akshaye who has come to repair electric equipment. While talking to him she learns that there is a vacancy in Jeetu (Akshaye Khanna) showroom. Desperately seeking a job Anjali makes up a story and gets the job. Enchanted by Anjalis beauty Jeetu thinks that she is Pareshs daughter and falls in love with her. Everyday after work he drops Anjali to what he thinks is her house. Jeetus frequent visits to his house make Paresh into believing that his wife Anjali is having an affair with him. On the other hand to keep up her hoax with Akshaye, Anjali daily sneaks into Pareshs house from the front gate and exits from the back door. Pareshs wife sees her coming and going and thinks that she is having an affair with her husband. While this confusion is on its full swing Nandu too falls in love with Anjali. To get her he tries to make her jealous by making her believe that he is in love with landlords young wife Upasana Singh. What follows next is a Hungama of comedy of mistaken identities.
But the actual trophy goes to Paresh Rawal and Shoma Anand for their excellent performances. Though
Paresh Rawal steals the show. He has got the open ground to harvest just like he got in Priyans earlier film. He makes you laugh by his well-timed witty dialogues.
The scenes that get you holding your jaws are where the husband and wife Tiwaris first suspect each other of falling into an extramarital affair with Anjali and Jeetu respectively. Then there is the funny sequence by Rajpal Yadav acting insane and the one in Kachra Seths godown make you laugh your heart out.
Nadeem-Shravans music is ear-pleasing but, strangely, all the songs have been featured as dream sequences. Moreover, the songs come up without valid situations, making you feel as if they have been incorporated in the film because Hindi films are, perhaps, incomplete without song and dance routines.
The performances of the entire cast are loud, Akshaye Khanna comes up with a decent performance. Aftab Shivdasani is reasonably good and Rimi Sen is extremely attractive and photogenic. Shakti Kapoor is as usual just the same. Rajpal Yadav is brilliant, although he comes in quite late in the film. Tiku Talsania and Upasna Singh are fair.
To sum up Hungama is a total comedy flick, if you want to relax and have fun.
