Hungama of mistaken identities!

Yesterday I went to the theatre, to watch this movie along with my husband and a friend. It was a rib-tickling comedy, which the whole audience enjoyed. I know I have to give my on opinion here. But I can vouch for the whole audience due to the laughter generated by the audience as the movie progressed fro one reel to another. It rolled so smoothly that as the characters appeared on the screened people laughed in advance before any dialogue was uttered, as it was very obvious that something disastrously funny is going to happen. All in all I enjoyed the movie to the fullest, though a couple of doubts did remain in my mind. The very fact that it was an enjoyable movie, did not give me much time to think of the doubts it created.

Hungama was a like a huge maze which fell in place at the end of the movie, though a few bits didn’t fit in. It is a comedy of errors. There are tons of misunderstandings, mix-ups and mistaken identities. Another point to be noted is that the cast has not resorted to artificial buffoonery to be funny. After the spate of horror films (mind you I didn’t watch any of them) this movie should provide a respite and tickle your funny bone if you have one. It a fun film and should appeal to all.

One, two, three, … this count is time consuming… Nandu, Anjali Jr., Anjali Sr., Jeetu, Jeetu’s Mom and Dad, Mr. Tiwari, housekeeper, Jeetu’s friend, Mr Popat and his wife, The lodge manager, the bisleri man, raja, the police inspector, milk man, Priya… I mean there are so many characters in this film. Each individual is special in his own way.

Hungama is a confusing comedy written and directed by Priyadarshan. His prior movies were ’Hera Pheri’ and ’Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar’ from which I watched the latter. This movie has the big names like Akshaye Khanna, Aftaab and Paresh Rawal. A much known face on TV, Rimi Sen is being introduced here. Hungama is the story of Anjali (Rimi Sen) who comes to Mumbai, to escape marriage. Her mother had borrowed money from a particular man and Anjali is forced to marry his son to pay off the karza. In Amchi Mumbai, she meets (Nandu) Aftab, who has also run away from home. A milkman advises them to pose as man and wife to get a roof over their head. Anjali meets Paresh Rawal for a job, whose wife’s name is also Anjali (Shoma Anand). Akshaye steals money from his father and opens a electronics showroom. During his visit to Paresh Rawal’s house, he meets Anjali Jr. and thinks she is Paresh’s daughter. Well let me stop here I don’t want to spoil the fun for you all when you watch this movie. If you know the story in advance, then there’s no punch whilst watching the movie. How all the characters sort out their entangled lives is the story of Hungama.

In all this confusion (hungama) Paresh Rawal stole the show. He is simply amazing and brilliant. I used to always detest him and the villainous roles he used to play. Now he having moved to comic roles, I simply adore him. The role of Anjali Sr. (Shoma Anand) is a rather exaggerated. The music isn’t very impressive.

At the end all the guys are electrocuted. If someone touches with a wooden stick the charge is supposed to be lost, but this doesn’t happens to be so in Hungaa. Any explanations?

Hungama has an entwined plot. You should watch it to understand what the H-U-N-G-A-M-A is all about.
