Good but not good enough!

Hi! I am in the process of buying a mid size car and I am from Mumbai. Recently I had the opportunity of driving an Accent GVS from Delhi till Amritsar and back. I must share my views, as I have been test driving almost all the models including Honda City, Optra, Fiat Petra & Adventure, Ford Fiesta etc. The reason why, I included the GVS under ’’Accent GLE’’ is purely because both the models are common in terms of engine and other features. In fact today’s GLE is nothing but yesterday’s GVS. Well almost! I drove the car for about 500 kms (The total distance (Del-Amritsar-Del) is approx. 1050kms). I drove both during daytime as well as night time. On four lane road as well as on single road. The car which I drove had done just above 7000kms and was relatively new. Here are my views What I liked : Hyundai believes in giving good interiors at not so high price. Accent’s interiors are good for that segment. The gear shift is good. Power steering is also good. The car was stable but noisy (you could hear the engine really working hard) at 140kmph (highest speed I touched). I consistently drove the car at about 120-125kmph and the car was stable. Head lamps are good and you can drive well in dark. The bonnet of the car gives a good solid feeling. Mileage which I got (I mostly drove @ about 3000 rpm) was about 14kmpl with A/C on all along. The cabin is relatively silent though sometimes, may be due to wind speed and direction, there was an intermittent noise (krrrrrrrr....) if the car was doing 120kmph and above. I guess it was the noise caused by the wind and the side view mirrors of the car. What I didn’t like : Power! Hyundai Accent 1.5 litre engine is not the car for those who like to drive themselves and that too like to go on long drives on highways once a while! It lacked power and it was very disappointing. Compare this with any FIAT car (Petra or Adventure) and you are bound to get disappointed. The car was sluggish in 1st and 2nd gear. 3rd gear was relatively ok. 4th gear is even bad. However once the car touches 90kmph, things are better. Braking of the car is not so good. Suspension also not very good and low seating in the back seat is not very comfortable. Inside the cabin, you do not feel as safe as you would in a Fiat or Optra for that matter. Also, we could smell petrol inside the cabin and we couldn’t figure out why? I have this experience with Accent even before. (This may be specific to the car, but if someone knows, must let others know about this problem). Ride and Handling is definitely not one of the best. (I feel Fiat or Honda are much better in this department). On uphill roads, it was really giving up! Overall : The experience was good especially when you see Hyundai dealers and workshops on your way. I feel this is a good buy for city driving and not for highway lovers and those who want to add power to their driving.
