Getz Prime 1.3 GLX - 200km report

Exterior Design (4/5)

Very attractive, especially the front side. But rear side is a little bit cluttered with too many badges and too thick a blank rubber strip under the number plate.

Interiors (5/5)

The beige colour scheme is very pleasing to the eyes.  The dashboard looks very neat and simple to use.  Lot of storage places to hold all the usual stuff that you take on a journey.  The centre console is slightly tilted towards the driver, which gives a rich car feel.

Performance (4/5)

3rd gear is the best, it pulls the car right from 20kmph with AC.  Low end torque is good.  Highway driving and overtaking is a breeze.  Autocar claims 0-100km dash in 14.5 seconds with a top speed of 165Kmph, which I think this car is very capable of.  It beats Skoda Fabia 1.4 too in the acceleration test (Fabia takes 15 secs).  Swift is the quickest in the trio with 13 secs.  83BHP/11.8Kgm is quite good for the car whose weight is around 1025kgs.

Fuel Economy (3/5)

Getting around 9kmpl (rough estimate) in city with AC.  But I hope this will increase marginally atleast after the first service.  One of the weak points possibly, but definitely not as bad as it was when Getz was initially released.  Some tweakings have been made in Getz Prime for better fuel economy, says the dealer.  AutoCar claims 10.4 and 14.5 in City and Highways respectively.

Ride (4/5)

Especially at medium and high speeds, the ride becomes very pliant and smooth.  At low speeds on bad roads, however, the ride is a bit fidgety and the passengers get tossed around a bit.  Alloy wheels and R14 175/65 profile tubeless tyres add to the ride comfort I believe.  But either with Allow wheels or with ABS, you have to drive slowly over bad roads.

Handling (4/5)

Softly sprung suspension however compromises on the handling a little bit but that is only when you throw the car around.  I dont do that and neither do most of us, so this is not an issue.

Braking (5/5)

ABS pitches in whenever required, but I am not able to tell when exactly.

Refinement (5/5)

This is class leading I would say. There is pin-drop silence inside the cabin and you won’t even know if the engine is running.  Also road noise and tyre noise are completely filtered.  Even a big pothole in the road is handled with a faint muted thud.

Safety (4/5)

ABS yes but no airbags.  And all the usual safety devices such as collapsible steering column, crumple zones, side impact beams etc.  Visibility all around is fantastic from driver seat, so this makes you drive with ease and confidence.  Other features such as rear defogger, rear washwipe, fog lamps, high mounted stop lamp (in spoiler) add to the overall safety of the car.  NCAP rating for this car is a commendable 4 out 5 stars for occupants safety.  Sheet steel thickness is average, and could have been a grade thicker.

Quality (5/5)

Quality of all the materials and gadgets used is very good for a car in this segment.  However the mock wood finish in the central console is a let down.  Quality of all electrical switches is good.

Space (5/5)

Very spacious inside. Good management of space with a cab forward design.  Front leg room, front knee room, rear knee room and rear shoulder room among the best in the class.  Boot space is good too (290 litres), with only Fabia beating it (300).

Comfort (4.5/5)

Beautifully designed seats both front and back.  Good for even tall people like me (6’).  Rear seats recline (push-back seats) and this is something that you see only in Getz.  Rear seats also split 60:40 and double fold.  Very useful when you have more luggage.  Driver seat has got a left arm rest!  One thing that I miss here is driver seat height adjustment.

AC is terrific.  No strain on the engine.

Power windows is available with Auto Down for driver side.  No anti-pinch feature though (be careful when kids are in).  Illuminated switches for power windows is a thoughtful feature, very useful in the night time.

Power steering (Tilt adjustible) is good but a bit heavy (no EPS).

Sun film came as an accessory, and the dealer would only go for a government approved one. I said ok at that time, but now I feel the darkness is not sufficient.  I see lot of cars with a darker sun film, so dont know if they are all not government approved.

No music system came with the car, so got it fitted as an accessory.  Made a mistake and went for door mounted speakers instead of having them on the rear parcel tray.  Good boot space now but poor sound quality (bass).

Fuel lid can be opened remotely but not the boot!  No dual horn though the manual specifies that as standard.  Why did Hyundai leave these things out?

No remote for central locking, so got it as an accessory. But the Piranha model did not have reverse horn, so fixed it outside.  But now the reverse horn beeps even if you do a passive unlock.

No electrically retractible or adjustible ORVMS.

Rear seats do not have adjustible head restraints. Probably because it comes in way while folding the seats, but the design must have taken care of this issue.

Instrumentation (4/5)

Digital ODO meter (with 2 trip meters) and clock and analog tacho meter, speedometer and fuel guage. No engine temperature guage though (only an indicator for coolant temp).

Door ajar, boot ajar & low fuel warning lights are useful.

Value For Money (4/5)

The on-road price of this model in Chennai is 5.51 lacs, I got a discount of 15K + some accessories worth 5K.  With all the goodies that this car comes with, I think it is good value for money.  Resale value of this car however is not going to be too high.

Dealer satisfaction (4.5/5)

I purchased from Kun Hyundai, Anna Nagar, Chennai and I had a good experience overall.  They helped me to beat the price hikes.

Reliability (5/5)

Based on the feedback of one of my friends, it is very reliable with no problems in the two years that he had this vehicle.

Overall (4.5/5)

I’d strongly recommend you to go for this car if you want a premium hatch with good performance, ride comfort, space and a silent cabin.  You’ll enjoy every moment driving it!
