When I decided to open a NRI account to make sending money to India easy, which bank came to mind first? Back in late October I took the plunge and completed the forms which I had downloaded from the site. I took my time to complete and even sent email to the help line. By the 1st week in November I had sent off teh appication along with all the ID and a cheque to cover my opening balance. 4 weeks passed and nothing. I was thinking what should I do? I waited another week.
By patience was rewarded as my cheque had arrived by courier from India, then in another package my internet ID, a week later ATM debit card, ATM pin. All seemed fine, even called the 24 hour helpline and found staff friendly even if the call was expensive as I was calling from UK to a cell line in India.
I logged in and checked my a/c to see what exchange rate I had got on my opening balance? no balance?? what , that could not be right? but it was. I logged on and checked my UK bank on which the cheque was drawn, it had not been cashed. I fired off an email to ICICI. I got the auto generated email blah blah blah and that they would look into the matter. while all this was going, the cheque was cashed, even though this was made out to myself. I have since emailed ICICI numerous times but they are still looking into the latter.
NRIs please be careful.
