C for Calcutta

IIM stands for Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. There are six IIMs in the country : at Ahmedadad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Lucknow and Cochi. The first IIM to be established in India is at Calcutta. Unlike the IITs, which have come up as world class institutions by an Act of Parliament, the IIMs are the collaborative efforts of Government and Industry. Each IIM is autonomous in character, managed by its own Governing Council, although there is a mechanism to coordinate the efforts of all the six IIMS.

IIM - Calcutta is written as IIM-C, where as this Reviewer’s institute, Indian Institute of Mass Communication is called IIMC. Thank God, people, while discussing about the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta call it as IIM, Calcutta.

IIM, Calcutta follows the pattern of MIT, the Massachussets Institute of Technology, USA. IIM, Ahmedadad follows the Harvard pattern, where discussion of Case Studies is the main stay.

You must be thinking that either I am a former student of IIM, Calcutta or I am associated with it in some capacity. None of the two. My younger brother was a student of IIM, Calcutta in the first batch. And a brother-in-law of mine was a Professor there teaching Organisational Behaviour. Moreover, I am also interested in Management, as a Manager and Administrator.

The subjects which are taught at IIM, Calcutta are wide ranging - Financial Management, Marketing, Personnel Management, Organisational Behaviour, Public Relations and the like.

The students, on completion of the two-year post-graduate programme, get a Diploma in Management, whose market value is very high. In the Campus Recruitment, almost every student gets a job with a monthly salary of the order of 1.5 lakhs. A young man or woman in his/her twenties getting this salary is really admirable. The entry point is at Graduate level. A B.A, B.Sc., or B.Com is the minimum qualification for admission, that is highly competitive.

One has to prepare well to get it. Many young men and women are now preparing themselves for the Management Career. And the Civil Services like the IAS, IPS, IFS, and the Allied Services are no longer attractive. Best of Luck to those of you who are seeking a Management Career.
