I always considered Neruda, one of the greatest poets of last century as someone very esoteric. IL Postino, the Italian movie proved me wrong. IL Postino – The Postman – is a touching tale of almost everything – politics, poetry, love, innocence, humour et al. Directed by Michael Radford, the film handles one of the most intricate dimensions of human relationship – friendship. The film excels in its script, cinematography and direction. I felt that there is not a single word used unnecessarily in the entire script – just enough words to tell this deeply moving anecdote.
The hero (Massimo Troisi) is a postman in the coastal village of Italy. Neruda spends some time of his life here serving exile. Mario – the postman – brings letters to Neruda daily. Overcoming the initial awe, Mario manages strike conversations with Neruda and what ensues is an extraordinary relationship – between the man who is loved by millions across the world and Mario – an obscure fellow. The poet slowly, but surely introduces Mario to the world of poetry, metaphors etc. The script beautifully handles this relationship between the un- equals delicately. An unschooled fellow like Mario argues with an erudite like Neruda as if they are equals.
The cast is wonderful, with Mario spreading righteousness and innocence. The film gave me a multi-sensory effect. The picturesque scenery is captured wonderfully through the camera. They made me feel and smell the freshness of the place. A truly captivating film which will stream in your minds as a poetry. A must see for all those who love ‘good’ cinema.
