Firstly let us admit that Akash Chopra has been a real good find for the indian test team.
We were on the verge of beating the aussies in australia, one of the major factors was a sound opening partnership that we were getting.
Earlier it used to be 50-2 n sachin n dravid playing out the new ball n would eventually nick one (they are human arn’t they?)
The last series we had 6 opening partnerships over 100.
So the pressure on our famous middle order was so much lesser. anyways no one is doubting what yuvraj has done for india.
But Opening In test matches is not easy.
We must remember that we took a gamble with sehwag but its paid off well. it might not pay off well with yuvraj, that too before an important series (aussies are coming to india again to get beaten)
Akash is a Regular opening batsman, hes been opening all his life. yuvraj has never opened an innings even for punjab where he plays his domestic cricket.
But thats the only place for him to play.. its better to have a hard hiting yuvi we all know in the extras of a test team rather than have a uncomfortable yuvi to open.
Remember what we did to VVS laxman. he was asked to Open. he was a middle order batsman as well. He couldn’t change his game n suffered n eventually was shown the door.
He made a comeback with his immense talent n commitment n scored that amazing 280 in kolkatta..
Come to think of it , we had dug our own grave by asking him to open...
The same shud not happen again.
Yuvraj like a true soldier says he is ready to bat at any position his team management tells him to but what abt Chopra?
what has he done wrong?
The only flaw I have seen with chopra is that he gets tired at times n looses his concentration and is unable to convert to a bigger score.
Shouldn’t we give him some time.
Sachin scored his first hundred in his 79th one day game.
Chopra has just played a few tests. And remember he debued against the aussies n did so well.
Also Chopra n Sehwag have played so much cricket together, they have a good understanding and also understand each other’s game very well. its thse samll things like this that makea huge difference in the end.

PS: if chopra opens, does that make ganguly’s place in the team circumspect?because theres no one else yuvi can replace?? *interesting thought
