’’India Today’’ , for a second year in a row , has rated IIT - Kharagpur ( locally known as IIT - KGP ) as the best technical university of India. Though I dont trust India Today much but I am dead sure that a survey by any other agency would have culminated in the same result.Started back in 1950 it has now become one of the premier engineering institutes of Asia.
IIT KGP is a totally secluded and a very quiet place .Its because it is the first of all the IIT’s and back in 1950’s government decided to build IIT’s on the lines of western unis’ like MIT and Stanford which are far off from the cities and are self sufficient townships. But because of the fact that most of the land in Kharagpur is owned by railways , which allows no construction on its land , Kharagpur is same as it was 50 years back whereas other IIT’s which were built on the outskirts of metros are now engulfed in the expanding metros.
Over the years it has been seen that those who qualify JEE are a bit reluctant to join KGP and its only out of some compulsion that they join this institute.KGP’s location is the major factor for the reluctance of students to join it.But let me tell them form my experience that they would missing out so much ’’life’’ by not joining IIT - KGP.Even when I came here first I was like ’’oh God , where have I come !? when am I gonna get out of here .’’ But now its like I never wanna leave this place.i guess its the best part of my life that I am spending here.the best thing about IIT KGP is the hostle life here.I bet a million that nowhere else in India would you find such a happening hostle life.
Apart from a rigorous academic curricula there are lots of extra-curricular activities going on campus.There are 13 hostels , all of them name after freedom fighters.There are two General Championship
viz Sports and Social & Cultural for which all the hostels compete.There is cut throat competition amongst the hostels to win these GCs.
With computer in each room and 24/7 net access KGP has really become Hi-Tech.Many lectures are available online ( that doest mean you can bunk lectures ) . Books catalogue of Central Library is available online and a lot more.With the advent of net KGP has experienced a complete turnaround.
Trust me KGP is the place to be.
