A memorable experience

The oldest and largest museum of South Asia - The Indian Museum is located right in the heart of the city Kolkata. It’s walking distance to Park Street metro station.

The entry fees is only Rs. 10 and camera charge is Rs. 50. People from all ages can visit this place to relive the past. The museum is closed on Monday and on public holidays.

There are a variety of antiques and items which are displayed. I will discuss the overall layout and what sections are present -

1) From the entrance turn left and you will find the mammal section. At the front there is a large tusk of a mammoth. Bones, heads and other body parts of ancient mammals are displayed here from Africa, Shivalik range.

2) To the right of the entrance is the Bharut Stupa section that houses the remains of Bharut stupa. Further down, is the coins section from the Mughal period and Chola dynasty. There’s a statue section then of yakshis, buddha in various postures from different parts of the world.

There’s the beautiful garden in the centre of the museum, a place to relax.

Moving to the 2nd floor.

1) You will find a minerals section that houses various rocks, minerals, coal, lignite, etc.

2) The Egyptian section is the most attractive one that has two  mummies. The statues of various Egyptian Gods are displayed here.

3) The Reptalia section has bodies of alligators, snakes, various birds, fishes. There is a strong smell here so be sure to use a handkerchief. Chemicals are added to preserve various snakes.

4) Another section is of clothes worn by different price and princesses. It houses sarees, swords used by different rulers.

Overall it was a memorable experience. Do have some time in hand and then visit. Some sections do remain closed for maintenance.
