Interpersonal skills are very important to be successful in interviews. How a person behaves in an interview is very important. The interviewer not only looks for your qualifications but how you relate to others. Communication skills, behavorial skills, emotional intelligence, etc are some of the few things interviewers will judge you on.
Here are a few pointers you could take a rain check on !!
1. Punctuality: Try and arrive on time. Timing is very important !! It says a lot about your personality and interest in the job.
2. Papers : It is also important that you take with you the important papers. A copy of your resume. A sample of work in a floppy just in case. Carry a pen and a pencil.
3. Body Language: You must be very aware of your Body Language. You have to be approachable. Smartness is a must but you must be alert to what you are being asked and what impact it will have on your interviewer. Sit with your arms on the table. Dont fold your arms over your chest. This would present a defensive posture from your side. Dont try and look here and there. maintain eye contact and speak directly to the person. If there are more than one person, look at both and speak.. have a relaxed posture.
If you havent understood a question, you can ask the interviewer again what he meant. Take your time in giving a to the point answer. Interviewers dont usually have time for detailed explanation of how you went about working on a particular product.
Your speech also should be clear ... the interviewer should comprehend what you are trying to say .. :):)
Try and keep a smile on your face.. adds a lot of value to your personality.
4. Nervous and desperate ? : If you are nervous.... well count to 100. :):).There are two things which you must hide from your interviewer... Nervousness and desperation. If you are nervous, ask for a glass of water or think of something else. Nervousness is natural but too much of it will not be in your favour.... Try and act confident when you speak of your experience. Confidence is very essential but be careful not to be overconfident. Make sure that you are open to suggestions !!!
If you are desperate for that job please make sure you hide this feeling. An interviewer will always be wary if you are too eager to take the job. Be your natural self and refrain from asking too much or revealing too much....
5. Weaknesses: Refrain from harping on about what you cant do and wont do ... focus on what you can do well and how adaptive you can be ... initiative is something every interviewer looks out for.
6. Attire : Last but not the least, your attire is very important. Dress up comfortable and smartly. If you are uncomfortable it will project in your body language .. so take care to dress well and economically. By economically, I mean that dont go overboard with your makeup and perfumes, etc ... :):)
