Everybody need an interpreter. This is a main idea of Jhumpa Lahiri in her short story "Interpreter of maladies". Why so enigmatic title is? Born in London and raised in Rhode Island by her Bengali parents, Jhumpa Lahiri(born in 1967) visited Calkutta as a child and recognized the importance of both Indian and American cultures in her future life. This experience is reflected in her short story "interpreter of maladies" and other works. She is critical of the superficial adoptation of either culture, and readily admits that she feels neither Indian nor American.Running of events you can see through the lens of Indian interpreter. He, Mr Kapasi, as a tour guide drives the Das family from the USA to the Sun Temple in India. The family is ethnic Indians, born in America. Through his perspective Mr and Mrs Das aren’t so close nor really taking care of their three children. While visiting the Sun Temple, Mrs Das should ask Kapasi to interpret her common trivial little secret about the son Bobby. Her romantic interest to Kapasi as an interpreter from Gujarati of patients for the Indian doctor permits her to do it. In contrast the dreams of Capasi to understand and to love Mrs Das break. They disappear like the sheet of paper with his address fluttered away in the wind. Soft pictures of interesting criss-cross lines of different personages are meaningful for this short story. The attempt to come back to the native culture and misunderstanding, especially, the scene with monkeys, show reality of some dreams.
