When I said Black isnt all that black and tried to convince you about the overall part of the movie being saddening, Iqbal just proves my point. The movie is perhaps the best motion picture in recent times which is just way to simple. No huge investments, No great locales, No item numbers and no saddening melodrama like Black (Read my black review).
Iqbal is a story of a deaf and mute boy wanting to be a fast bowler and after 48 reviews I dont need to give away a lot of plot for that. The things that works for Iqbal are its simplicity, the natural performances and the feasibility of the whole situation plus the pride that I as an audience feel for Iqbals achievement.
Take the case to Michelle from Black, nope I dont feel elated and proud of her achieving the impossible..infact I am saddened at the end of the story. Iqbal takes the edge here. I dont pitty on him..i want him to do well and I am happy and jolly on his achievements instead ending with a heavy heart.
Shreyas Talpade as Iqbal was a good choice as Iqbal considering his dark tanned looks suiting the village boy image. He plays the character with ease without trying too much.
Naseruddin Shah proves that how simply and effectively he can deliver award winning performance. Same goes with ever dependable other characters. Girish Karnad gives a simple evil performance and without him trying too much he convinces the audiences that he is bad.
Nagesh Kukonoors first attempt in Hindi mainstream and he proves his worth. Music wise Salim Sulaiman surprised me for the fact that they can make music simple when I knew their old works like Kaal which is rather loud as compared to this one.
I feel its a pitty that movies like this dont turn out to be ultimate money spinners or probably the approach of promotiing the movie needs to be changed. All along the promos of the movie one got a feeling of an art kind of movie which actually Iqbal isnt.
The movie in some situations do faulter in how easily the things work for the protagonist especially the ending wherein the sponsorship episode might go as unexplained to the audience. All said and done...Iqbal is simple yet believable. Theres no melodrama what infact there is decent entertainment, inspiration if you seek some from movies and an assured smile that you come out with when the movie ends, a smile of contentment.
As a coach Nasser says to Iqbal Coach ka kaam hai do chaar aise waise baatein karke khiladi ka utsaah badhana...woh to bus kehta rehta hai
How true that is :)
