I have watched hell lot of movies !! I lived in atleast six different states of India and the only passtime our family had at that time on Sundays was to walk into a movie of any language. I have seen umpteen of them understanding many and rotting through the others. It was in college that I got the idea of evaluating movies and watching movies that were rated Galactic classics.
It was on one of those days that our whole gang walked int Galaxy theatre at Residency Road in banaglore. Mani was fresh from the fame he got through Roja and the mega hit in Bangalore only, Thiruda Thiruda and ofcourse the communal harmony preacher Bombay.
The movies initial scenes made me think that this would be a superior version of Nayagan.Half an hour into the movie and a few people walked out.An hour later the hall was near empty.
I was simply dumbstruck. So was my telugu friend ( who understood).I realised that we were watching arguably the ggreatest tamil movie of all time. The tamil dialogues were mesmerising to say the least and the story was beautifully woven. Superb use of lighting and awesome music marked the movies progress.Mohan Lal and Prakash Raj were putting up a tremendous performance.
The characters woven around the life of MGR and Karunanidhi with a dose of Jayalalitha generously dipped in, it made me feel as though I was witnessing the politics of that period. It clearly brings up the ego of both these men and has a resplendent ending.
The only problem though is that it is an outright tamil movie as even an ordinary tamil will not be able to understand some of the dialogues. Heres a director who makes movies for future generations to appreciate. Hats off Mani !!Watching Iruvar is a lifetime experience.
