This love story isnt out of the world!

Actor Riteish Deshmukh and writer Milap Zaveri had worked together in Masti which released on April 9, 2004. The film went on to become a big hit. When Milap became the director with Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai starring Riteish, the duo decided to release the film on the same day as Masti, April 9. They believed it’s a lucky day for them and that Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai will work the same way as Masti. And their new offing indeed has a great direction, wonderful performances and funky music. However, the film still fails for the simple reason that there is not much story. The goings-on in fact become boring and it forced me to break into a yawn-a rarity when it comes to me and movies!

The story of the movie: Rajesh (Riteish Deshmukh) is a Gujju guy working as an assistant director with director Farah Khan who’s making her 3rd film. The heartthrob of the nation, Desh (Ruslaan Mumtaz) is the leading actor in the film. On the sets, Rajesh meets Natasha (Sonal Sehgal) and falls in love with her. But unfortunately, she rejects him and Rajesh feels dejected. Throughout his life, he tried his best but failed to find the girl of his dreams. Until he came across Tara (Jacqueline Fernandez), a beautiful young girl who comes all the way from Venus to Earth in search of love. How Tara finds love, how Rajesh helps her and with whom she finally falls in love is what the rest of the film is all about.

One won’t have any complaints with the first half. The beginning portion (Riteish’s ‘tragic’ childhood) is idiotic but manages to impress. Desh’s entry was innovative and in many ways, the best part of the first hour. Natasha rejecting Rajesh’s proposal was dramatically treated. Things improve even more after the alien Tara enters the narrative. Here Milap does a splendid job in depicting how the alien learns the various mannerisms related to humans. Tara even has superpowers-she can rewind, pause situations in real life and can lift an object as heavy as truck! Her conversations with Riteish were damn interesting.

However, things go for a downfall in the second hour. Too many conflicts are added. What could have been shown in 20 minutes flat is stretched to 1 hour. The characters could have solved all problems fast if they had given the chance. But since the director wanted to make a 2 hour film, he didn’t allow them to do so! Only 2 scenes which leave a mark here are-Rajesh taking Tara to the temple and church and Tara realizing that she’s in love with Rajesh. Climax was also stretched but the last scene involving Amrita Rao’s guest appearance was hilarious! But the boredom that 2nd half provides takes a heavy toll and you might come out of the theatre disappointed!

Riteish Deshmukh once again comes up with a splendid performance. He scores very well in emotional scenes (especially towards pre-climax) and when it comes to light-hearted comic sequences, he’s an expert without doubt! After Rann, Riteish’s act in Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai will surely be remembered as one of his finest!

Jacqueline Fernandez was perfect for the role! The reason is that she has a very angelic, or should I say ‘alienic’ face due to which her performance looked convincing! And it seems she has dubbed her own lines too! Great work!

Ruslaan gives a fine performance. Most notable is his toned and muscular look in the film which is so different from what he did in the past. Sonal Sehgal was alright and looked better in the first half. Vishal Malhotra was terrific. He was in complete form! Satish Shah plays his part well. Ditto for Supriya Pilgaonkar. Both add some humour in the film here and there.

The film has numerous special appearances.Farah Khan’s act was the best among them. Her ‘Miss you Shah Rukh’ dialogue was brilliant! Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Karan Johar, Sajid Khan and Amrita Rao are there for just a scene but they all impress! Boman Irani’s scene is missing from the film. Seems it was to be used for promotional purposes only!

Sajid-Wajid’s music was trendy and fits the movie well. Their background score was perfect and lifted some of the boring scenes in the film. Except Nacha Main, all the rest of the tracks are nicely composed. Attar Singh Saini’s cinematography was exceptional in some scenes. Sukant Panigraphy does a great job as production designer. Check out Riteish’s room the Drive-In theatre in the film…beautiful sets!

Besides directing the film, Milap Zaveri also wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues of the film. He faltered when it comes to story. He chose a nice plot-a love story between alien and human-but failed to turn it into a convincing and interesting one, because of which his script also suffered. But he’s marvelous as a director and if aided with nice scripts, he could one day come up with a fantastic film!

Some of the best scenes:

  1. Rajesh’s childhood and Desh’s entry

  2. Rajesh with Natasha

  3. Kaushal (Vishal) explaining the ‘Friends’ theory (funny!) T

  4. Tara’s entry in the narrative

  5. Tara and Rajesh’s conversations throughout the film

  6. Desh meets Tara for the first time

  7. Rajesh takes Tara to the temple and church The final scene

On the whole, Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai is strictly okay. It is well directed and performed but fails due to the weak storyline. It’s okay if you miss it and reserve it for home viewing. This love story isnt out of the world, sadly!
