Movie : Jab Tak Hain Jaan
Music : AR Rahman
Singers : Rabbi Shergill, Raghav Mathur, Shilpa Rao, Neeti Mohan, Shreya Ghoshal, Hardship Kaur, Javed Ali and Mohit Chauhan
Lyrics : Gulzar
I heard the songs of this movie the moment the trailer came out. I am so damn excited to see SRK and Yash Chopra work together, and to top it off – AR Rahman directing the music!! After hearing the music, now that I think of it, it seems really surprising that an Oscar-winning director can make such music.
Don’t get me wrong – I like the songs – especially some of them – but the songs just didn’t seem Oscar-material to me. I mean I guess I expect something more from the talented AR Rahman. There are so many recent songs which are much better than the songs of this album (Student of the Year, Cocktail, etc.) and thus I see no reason to hear the songs of Jab Tak Hain Jaan especially.
The songs –
(1) Challa ( Rabbi Shergill )
The first song released of this album, and I don’t like it at all. I still used to endure it earlier, but now I can’t tolerate it at all. Never heard of the singer, but he sure has an awful voice – which I absolutely hate. The lyrics aren’t that special or something to get very hyper about and music is just so-so types. For me, the main letdown of this song is the singer and his voice. Thus, this song is a strict no-no for me.
(2) Saans ( Shreya Ghoshal and Mohit Chauhan )
My two most favorite singers who have sung most of my favorite songs. And this song is no exception. Really beautiful tune, which suits the romantic mood, and wonderful lyrics ( which has ‘Gulzaar’ written all over it ) . – Saans mein tere, saans mili toh, Mujhe saans aai, mujhe saans aai…..
The aalaap sung by Shreya in the middle of the song is again, really pleasing to hear and I’m all praises for this song. Do hear.
(3) Jiya Re ( Neeti Mohan )
My favorite song in the album – I so damn LOVE it!! After singing the melodious Ishq Wala Love from SOTY, Neeti Mohan’s back with this song. I couldn’t believe it when I first heard the song – she sings so differently in this. Nice lyrics, fabulous singer, and a nice music – this song is a must hear.
(4) Ishq Shava ( Raghav Mathur and Shilpa Rao )
Okay, so this song is not that good – it’s nice but I don’t like Raghav Mathur’s voice in this song. This was what I meant by saying that the songs were nice, but not Oscar-material. Anyways, Shilpa Rao starts this song in an awesome way but soon loses her charm. But still – I like to hear this song; it’s got a nice feel to it.
(5) Heer ( Hardsheep Kaur )
Nice lyrics, awesome tune, suits any depressing situation – so then why couldn’t they’ve had a nice singer to this song?? Kaur’s voice becomes irritating after a while and the song soon becomes painful. I won’t say much about this son – hear it but you won’t like it much.
(6) Jab Tak Hain Jaan ( Javed Ali and Shakthisree Gopala )
If you told me to choose another song other than Jiya Re from this album, which I totally, absolutely love – it would be this song. So damn beautiful, so meaningful and the singers seem to sing with so much feeling!! The lyrics are beautiful and though short, the song lives up to all my AR Rahman-expectations. Not much words, just hear it.
(7) Saans – Reprise ( Shreya Ghoshal )
Same tune as the original song, this song is beautiful too – though I miss Mohit Chauhan a lot in this one. Yet, it is worth a hear.
(8) Ishq Dance – Instrumental Nope, I didn’t like this song – tune – whatever you call it. I more or less didn’t get it. I guess it’ll seem better with the video ( and I’m waiting for it a lot! ) but right now, I didn’t bother to hear it more than once.
Thus, overall it is indeed a good album with a few not-so-good songs, but it’s definitely worth hearing.
Thanks for reading.
