We travelled to Jaisalmer in mid April - not a particularly good season, until you are nuts like us - who wanted to feel the dessert heat and know the hard dessert life in summer :-).
Must do:
Take a camel safari for atleast 2 days and one night.
One of the most recommended travels who organize safaris - Sahara Travels, located just outside the Golden Fort Gate. We travelled with them - and believe me they handle everything very professionally. We received everything promised to us from chilled water (!!) to foot-print-less sand dunes. They did a great job. It costed us Rs.900/- per person (for 2 days and 1 night inclusive of jeep, camel and food costs)
Ideal time to go:
Winter season (November to February). Be prepared for very cold evenings though.
Tip:
Travel light. At the sand dunes you will be provided with quilt and a bed - so do not worry on that.
You can expect camel safaris to be pretty tiring. So ensure that you and everybody taking the safari are physically fit.
Be very particular about your plans of the safari - and talk it out with the safari organizer clearly before the trip.
Travelling on camel back is itself a good experience. Be careful when the camel gets up and sits down - you will get used to it after a couple of times. After some time you would be able to control the camel and even make it run! Its fun. We travelled about 60kms or more on camel back over two days. Knowing the people of the dessert, seeing their villages is exciting for city people like us.
We went to a sand dune about 50kms from Jaisalmer to see the sunset and spend the night. It was beautiful. The dune does not have a name. Its a spot that Sahara Travels take people to - who goes for overnight safaris. It has no foot prints, and believe me its much much more beautiful than SAM (the most famous san dune near jaisalmer). We were thrilled at the beauty of the starry night and complete darkness in the dune - where we slept under the open skies.
We went to SAM sand dunes also to see sunset but did not like it much, especially after seeing the dune where we spent the night. SAM is too congested, full of foot marks and very commercialized. For friends who might be thinking why I talk about foot prints - beauty of a sand dune lies in its pattern formed by the wind - and the foot prints are a sore to the eyes.
In Jaisalmer we also visited the Golden Fort and the three havelis - good for its architecture and history. They are worth a visit. But if you plan a visit to Jaisalmer try to put a overnight camel safari in your schedule - you will cherish your experience for long.
