James Herriot...a retired vet who writes about his experiences with animals. This book is mainly dedicated to dog lovers and has a series of touching stories. The book begins with a narration by the author of his experience with his own dogs and the way he dealt with his death. That itself makes you realise the emotional attachment that the author shares with each and every animal he comes across....There is this story about a dog which is left stranded by his owners on the middle of the road because they dont need him anymore and how he struggles endlessly and the vet also struggles emotionally with him and when finally the dog finds a good house you too experience a sense of relief along with the way the author has expressed....
There is this another one where a poor man has only a dog as a companion and finally the dog falls ill and the vet has no other option but to put the dog off to sleep and the poor man cant pay him any money and so even in his distress offers him the last ciggarette that he holds......Various other humorous stories are there where a dog cant stand the face of the vet cause once the dog had had poisoned porridge and enjoyed it a lot. The owners called the vet and the vet punched the dogd stomach and made it vomit and since then the dog does not let him enter the house.
Cant blame the poor dog though, there is no way he can understand why he was punched badly after a nice heavy meal! All in all, a very enjoyable read for animal and especially dog lovers. It will take you through various emotions like concern, compassion, care and also hatred for people who dont care enough and sadness for the fact that you cant do enough. A final word.....Do as much as you can for animals, for too much also is not enough.
