Paradise on Earth

I boarded a train from Bombay to Jammu. Took a cab from Jammu to Katra. Stayed the night and walked up to Vaishno Devi, a 10 or 13 km walk ( You can horse-ride though not advisable if you pity your rear and back )Came back the next day and rested after the long walk and cooled my ankles and throbbing feet.

Took a cab to Patni Top a land carpeted in green with coniferous trees and a naturally beautifull landscape.

JKTDC have their cottages and rooms which can be booked and have excellent locations and food. Give this place two days and preferably visit in the months of November and December when it is snowing.

Took a cab and drove to Srinagar an ardous 7 to 8 hour journey by an ambassador. Amazing drive with a breathtaking view of snow clad mountains and a colourful valley which is Kashmir. Words fail me to describe this wonderful painting on Earth which God has painted so endearingly. All throughout the route, dribbling landslides and Kesar (saffron) plants and a riot of colours that make this a sight to experience.

In Srinagar the Dal lake is a marvel by itself. The self contained houseboats with all possible luxeries and ameneties one would expect in a deluxe lodge await you at prices that are a delight. (Rs.500/- all inclusive per day)

A trip to Gulmarg and Pahalgam is a must and a day or two must be alloted to each. A trip on the ropeway is not to be missed for the awe inspiring climb up snow caressed mountains. All through out I encounter various security and military personnel who revel in sharing their experiences. They have a thankless job to do and are more often condemned for it than praised.

Took a half hour flight out of Srinagar to Jammu and back to good old Bombay.
