Are you someone who strictly believes in values - honesty, righteousness, punctuality....blah, blah..? And are you ready to watch a girl (ahem...she’s almost a lady..well, ne’er mind) with thick, black-rimmed glasses, braces on her teeth ’n who wears her salwar kameez in the most old-fashioned way? And more important, are you free at 9.30 pm from monday to thursday? Well, if your answer is ’yes’ to all the above, go ahead ’n watch ’’jassi jaissi koi nahin’’ on sony.
Meet Jasmeet Walia, alias jassi, who’s ahead of everyone in everything except good looks ( so the title song goes..). She’s the only daughter of Balwant Walia, a strict dad. A doting mom and an overly-concerned ’bebe’ complete this perfect Punjabi family photo. Nandan Verma, or Nandu, is jassi’s best friend...he too sports glasses, and is always seen with a bag ( can’t guess why). Jassi’s the epitome of everything that is righteous, value-driven ’n according to rules...in short, everything that’s a bit boring.
As for work, she’s the personal secretary to Armaan Suri ( apna Apoorva Agnihotri, yaar), who’s the chairman of Gulmohur Fashion House, owned by his dad Purshottam suri. Armaan is assisted in his job by Raj, who’s more obsessed with babes rather than the business of Gulmohur. Armaan, an easily irritable hunk of a boss, is caught between trying to save his firm from losses, pleasing his dad ’n saving his engagement to Mallika Seth, who’s also the vice-president in Gulmohur. To add to his troubles there is Aryan Seth ( Mallika’s bro), who’s hell bent on removing Armaan from chairmanship.
So whom does Armaan turn for help? Apni jassi, of course...she manages all his files, sales, fashion shows, meetings, engagement party, ’n when Gulmohur is on the verge of bankruptcy, she agrees to help him in registering as the owner of Kohinoor, a non-existent firm, so that Gulmohur recovers....in short, Jassi’s the right hand of Armaan ’n Gulmohur...in fact, more than that. Armaan is totally dependent on Jassi, ’n of course, his chum Raj, who offers him a variety of ideas, free of cost....(most of ’em flop is another thing altogether!)
In the midst of all this comes Purab Mehra, a business tycoon, wanting to buy Gulmohur ( don’t ask me why - if I go into the details, u’ll fall asleep...i can already hear ur yawns) ’n falls in luv with Jassi (this came as a jolt to me. sach mein.) while Jassi’s in luv with her boss ( she writes it in her diary) but her boss doesn’t luv mallika at all...( whew!) ’n few episodes back, I saw Armaan say ’’ I luv u’’ to jassi ($#!!??##@%!!!) ....which disgusted me so much that I stopped seeing the programme!
The title is quite true..there can be no one like this character. She’s such a goody-goody that ’tis irritating most of the time. Okay, bhaiya we need 2 be kind, benevolent ’n all that stuff..but I think she’s juz too much. ’N not only her...all the other characters also seem so unrealistic ...take Armaan, for instance. How can a chairman of a so-called ’reputed’ fashion house be unaware of vital statistics regarding his firm? ’n Mallika always has loads of make-up, and Aryan wears a characteristic villain-like sneer and ’’main tujhe chodunga nahin’’ look.
And we also have certain people who are a plain eyesore...Pari, one of the staff, who’s always thinking of boyfriends, and Maddy the designer with his anglicised hindi (’’ shoo, pari, shoo!’’), for example. The only normal person seems to be Raj, who provides a bit of much-needed humour and relief.
Jassi’s boring, but there’s a positive side to her as well.....she never tries to change herself for others’ sake. Whatever the circumstances, she’s shown the guts to be herself, inspite of her looks....’n that’s something I highly appreciate.
So, for all you folks who’ve decided 2 watch the programme, I, as an amateur astrologer, predict that ur bad time will start from 9.30 pm and end at 10 pm from monday to thursday.....’n the rest ( the lucky ones) will get to enjoy a half-an-hour slot of mtv or ss music...or anything else they wish!!
