The heroine Jassi is your simple girl next door who has been portrayed as a Plain Jane. Shes not your regular heroine, mind you. She sports thick-black framed glasses, braces, an absolutely old-fashioned hairdo and wears totally ill-fitting and dull salwaar kameezes.
The title song says Ek ladki hai aasmaan ke neeche, sab baton mein aagey - roop rang mein hai peeche. Duniya toh uski hasi udaaye, par wo sabse kehti jaaye ~ Tum jaise laakho hai par Jassi jaissi koi nahin. Yes, Jassi stands out from the crowd, initially for the wrong reasons but eventually for the right ones.
Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin is all about the survival of the fittest in this day and age of glamour and beauty. Good looks are overrated and thats whats shown very well in this serial. Jassi is portrayed as someone who just doesnt fit in the happening crowd in the Fashion house Gulmohur, but she happens to be the only who is intelligent, witty and sharp. She starts out as the chairmans (Armaan Suri) secretary but ends up being his personal assistant as she impresses everyone with her marvellous performance in the tough times. She wins friends and she makes some enemies as well, in Mallika (Armaans fiancée), Pari (Mallikas best friend) and Aryan (Mallikas brother and Armaans rival for the chairmans position). A strong woman who, despite being discouraged and ridiculed, moves on and climbs up the ladder of success with the support of her mother, father, grandmother, a strong belief in God and a best friend called Nandu.
But thats not all about this program. Our Jassi falls in love with her boss (a Casanova) and does all that she could possibly do for him. Now all that the viewers are anxious about is: Will Armaan ever fall in love with Jassi? Will Jassi bring about a change in her appearance? Will Mallika get what she wants? ?. And so on.
Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin has been a big change for the Indian viewers since it started airing on September 2003. Adapted from the world famous series Yo Soy Betty La Fea, this show is NOT TO BE MISSED.
Mona Singh is simply marvellous as Jassi. No one else could have played the part as well as she has done. She has managed to make a normal girl identify with her character. Considering its her debut in the acting career, she is doing a fantastic job.
