A gripping drama that could've better!

Jazbaa is all about a lady advocate’s run to get back her abducted daughter by defending the accused of a rape and murder case. The movie had a plot that could bring wonders; her investigation with the company of a rogue cop on parallel with defending the accused had that potential to formulate a gripping thriller, though it does so to a good extent, the movie had its own downs. The prime negative being the lackluster presentation itself; Sanjay Gupta’s direction was racy but certain shots made me doubt whether the movie was set in some post-apocalyptic age, the same thing goes with editing; cuts were of poor clichéd quality.

Though these things stand on one side, the racy narration and whodunit factor keeps the viewer engaging, for the emotional sequences being the best part. But less of emotions, one can see Aishwarya Rai screaming a lot in the initial half with red eyes, still she has done her part well, was able to present ‘Anuradha Varma’ in an expressive manner; a role made for her age and caliber. Though touted to be her comeback vehicle, it was ridden by Irrfan Khan, who impresses with unexpected wits and roughness of character; I wish he had a couple of more scenes without yellow lighting. While these two actors expose impressive performances, it is Shabana Azmi who takes care of the emotional side; perfect!

Though the movie stay unconvinced at the technical side, Sameer Arya’s cinematography was good at parts; hope the visual effects were lesser. Background score by Amar Mohile sets the screen on fire while songs by Sachin- Jigar stay average.

Overall, Jazbaa is a movie that could’ve been far better if script was taken care of; in spite of having good flavor of thrill, the movie settle down to average levels for those mistakes. Who wants to see rapper Baadshah singing in some disco while our protagonist is running for clues! But the movie is one time watchable for remarkable performances from lead actors and racy narration.

Final Note: Average

The 11:30AM show at Cine Town Miyapur had some 20% status.
